PFT: Panthers 25th in Pre-Season Rankings

Haha, another ranking, another demand for respect. Though I don't agree with the ranking, where I come from, they say respect is not demanded, it's earned.

Just look at it this way, in 2011, the seahawks were 7-9 (just like us). Did we hear anything about them? Nope! But last season, they lit it up and now they are ranked consistently top 3 and are talked about a lot.

I know we talk about how close we were in games and all that but how would you explain ranking a team with a consistent losing record to a casual NFL fan who does not watch any NFC south games let alone Panthers games?

We win, we will be talked about period!

Thats right.  We spank that Seattle ass in week 1 and suddenly we will be someone to talk about.

I definitely share your frustration. However we must place blame where it lies though, and it isn't with the media. Once we start winning those close games that have plagued us, everyone is going to jump on our dicks.

As I have said countless times, all this hinges on Rivera's ability to coach us to a win.

I think Rivera got a lot better near the end of the year with his ability to coach, he got a lot smarter.

The thing I hate about the media though is they will place teams like the chiefs and Dolphins, etc ahead of us. Our team's roster is stacked for a winning season the only holes I see in our team is the cornerback position, and I think that if you (not you, but in general) would go back and watch the games near the end of the season you would think these guys we had starting at corner where top 15 corners. Josh Thomas to me is sooo underrated, he has the mentality of Munnerlyn, but much better athletically and mentally.

The only guy on two positions that we have questions about that SS spot and #2 corner. Our receiver position is amazing unlike much of the media and everyone else is saying, let's just think Lafell is a good #2 receiver he was just below the average for other #2 receiver, while missing two games. Then we have 3 good receivers battling for a spot (Gettis, Hixon, and Ginn) on the roster. Yes I agree we still need a receiver that can step up into that future #1 spot, but our situation right now is great.

Hey bros. He's actually spot on with his analysis bros. I don't quite think there are 24 teams ahead of us bros, but we certainly have a boom or bust feel this year bros. So Darin can suck it for his ranking, but his analysis is on the money. Bros.

Spot on if you asked me too! A lot of the posters on here don't want to hear (or read) reality. Darin hit it perfect when he said the Panthers could win 5 or 10 games, and neither would be a surprise.

18 teams won between 5-10 games last year. Lets not make DG out to be a Nostradamus

 just yet.

As for the rankings, 25 seems a little low, I would put us at about 20 but hey, we are to months away from football, who cares.

Either Gantt has an axe to grind or he has enough experience with this fanbase and knows exactly what buttons to push to rile us up.

Anybody taking this ish seriously has been goofed. Preseason rankings are meaningless...like most other power rankings.

Weaknesses.

The secondary, to put it politely, is a real mess.

The best player, free safety Charles Godfrey, is kind of average. And he stands out among his peers.

Who starts next to him in the middle remains to be seen. They have an odd cast of spare parts (Haruki Nakamura, Mike Mitchell, D.J. Campbell), and have expressed interest in free agent Quintin Mikell, who would walk in the door as the best defensive back on the roster.

The news is worse at cornerback, where they have a sack full of nickels, but no one you really trust starting outside and matching up with a Roddy White or a Julio Jones (or a Vincent Jackson, or a Marques Colston, etc.).

Captain Munnerlyn is probably the best of the lot, an undersized competitor (which means he tries hard but people routinely throw over the top of him). They brought in Drayton Florence to shepherd a young group, and former Bears cast-off D.J. Moore could easily make a run at a starting job.

The good news is the Panthers have a good pass rush. The bad news is that pass rush will have to be better than just good to cover up the problems in the back.

They’re also not particularly deep on the offensive line, and are a year away from having needs for a pair of tackles.

Some truth to all of this.

I still think we win 10 games this year

Good point...the Seahawks game is huge on a lot of levels...the most obvious of course is we typically get off to a crappy start, and the Seahawks are a damn good team, with a secondary that Cam (and our receivers) is going to have to be at his best if he wants to complete any significant passes without a ton of picks. I am more worried about their receiving corps vs our secondary at this point.
