Stewart

People where saying get rid of Williams get rid of Williams!!! I am probably one of the biggest Deangelo fans, I think that he is a top 10 back if he is featured. I knew that if we got rid of Williams we would have a horrid running back situation. Even when healthy Deangelo is a better runner than Stewart, but the good news is we already have running backs getting groomed right now ready to be there when Deangelo retires.

ok and i don't. just a difference of opinion. just like i think star and gaydosh are athletic freaks for their size and they haven't produced on the field yet. no big deal.

There have been a litany of guys who are athletic freaks.  Just at quarterback you have guys like  like Culpepper, Vince Young, Akili Smith and Jamarcus Russell who were athletic freaks who didn't produce on the field.  We could look at every position.  I think that great athletic ability with no production isn't a freak, they are a bust.

Being elusive is one measure of a back but not the only one.  And it might not be the most important one.  Durability is the reason most running backs are in the hall of fame not their elusiveness.  Unless you are Gayle Sayers or Barry Sanders.  Stewart may be elusive but he is not that fast, not that durable and he disappears for stretches at a time.  That doesn't define him as a freak.

to keep this in perspective, I was giving you an answer to your question on why some fans think Stewart is a freak.  you disagree on his speed, which I think is more than adequate, and I look at his inconsistency involving the offense as a whole.

at 235, his size and speed is rare.  I think that falls under freakish ability.  Is he a straight up freak?  AP is a straight up freak.  That doesn't mean Stewart doesn't have some level of freakish ability.

which perhaps someone should have stated that clearer to avoid any misinterpretations of their intended meaning..  Then again, maybe they meant Stewart was just as much of a freak as AP..  Can't say I would agree with that.

As far as his durability, I think another year will be a better indicator.  I'd like to see him get back to his 2011 form and more involved in the passing game.

Being an athletic freak has nothing to do with production...it's all about measurables.  If someone had never played a sport in their entire life and runs a 4.3 40, throws up 35 reps on the benchpress, has a 43" vertical...that guy can't be deemed an athletic freak?

These professional scouts who know a ton more than any of us here have repeatedly used the term "athletic freak" to describe NFL prospects year after year.  I can't count how many times I've heard that term used about Ziggy Ansah before he even played a snap in the NFL.

tauren poole is the 5th best option on our roster

On paper of course he is...although 5th seems a bit of an exaggeration considering Barner hasn't even played a snap in the NFL (I'm guessing you put him in front of Poole).  Not saying Poole is better than Barner, but they're both unproven.  I'm not clamoring for Poole to start or anything, I'm just saying he was exciting to watch in the preseason last year and we only got a little glimpse of him.

Unless that comment was just made as an indication of how deep our backfield is...

Yeah they are commonly known as workout warriors. They make you think they are going to be great and they bust. I think of athletic freaks more like Newton who has the athleticism and the results at least in college and his first year in the pros.

To me they do go together someone who has great measurables but cant play the game is a bust not a freak. Do you think of bodybuilders as athletic freaks. Many of them have great measurables but cant play sports. Personally they just look like freaks.

The bodybuilder analogy is irrelevant.  Strength is just one aspect of athleticism, an extremely strong person does not make an athlete.  However, an extremely strong, agile, fast, conditioned person makes an athlete to me.

Do you recall this thread posted a while back?

I think most people would agree with me on the definition of an athlete based on the posts in that thread.  No one even mentioned anything about production in that thread...that's because I think you're the only one who ties production on the field to athleticism.  They're two completely separate aspects.  An athletic freak can also be a bust...a bust is just a term used for anyone who doesn't pan out in the NFL.

I think we just have different definitions of "athletic".  You seem to consider it more as someone who excels at sports, whereas I consider it someone who exhibits an exceptional blend of physical characteristics such as speed, strength, leaping ability, etc.  The term "athletic freak" being reserved for those with an elite level of those traits.

I know some will disagree with me on that definition, namely those who consider people like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady top-notch athletes.  People who consider them "athletic" do so from the standpoint that athleticism is tied to efficiency at sports.

I hadn't done this til now, but just google "athletic freak" and read the first couple articles.  They rank the top 20/top 10 "athletic freaks" and they repeatedly give 40 times, benchpress numbers, vertical leaps, etc. on each.  That's the criteria they're using to rank these athletes....yes, many of those players on those lists happen to have excellent college production as well, but that's only because freak athletes are in the best position to excel on the field because of their measurables.  With the exception of a few players from those two lists combined, the rankings don't mention anything about the players' stats in a given season...rather opting to go with 40 times, broad jumps, vertical leap, benchpress etc.
