The Official Pre-Camp Predict the WR corps for 2013 thread

1. Smitty

3. Lafell

4. Ginn

5. Edwards

6. Gettis, Adams

I really think Hixon will end up pushing Lafell for the #2 spot. I predict Hixon will have 1000 yards on the season.

Lafell will bump back into the #3 spot, but be pushed by Ginn. I think Lafell and Ginn will be good competition, and would not be surprised if Lafell isn't on the field eventually in 3WR sets.

Edwards is "improving" but I don't hold much stock in that. Regardless, at this juncture, give him the #5 spot.

If Gettis can't get on the field at times during camp, he should be gone. We should have seen Gettis last year. How many chances os he going to get? Give the 6th to whoever can stay on the field and practice.

Smith

Lafell

Ginn

Hixon/Gettis

Adams

I'm going out on a limb here and Edwards gets cut and Lamont gets his chance.

Pilares is the least dynamic of the players which isn't saying much when compared to Adams and Edwards.

Some may be forgetting that Pilares has made plays when given a chance. On kickoff returns, he's nothing special, but he has made a number of big plays on special teams, including downing the punt inside of the 1 yard line that should have sealed the 1st Falcons game. When he has had chances on offense, he has made plays, it's just been a very small sample size.

I understand the love for Adams, but he's not especially fast, doesn't hold on to the ball well, and frankly just hasn't shown anything to suggest he could be a legit NFL player.

For me, it's Smith, LaFell, Hixon, Ginn, Pilares and probably Armanti. Like many, I wish one of the big guys would step up (Bryant or Gettis) to give us a good red zone target, but fear that is no more than wishful thinking.

Smitty

Lafell

Hixon

Ginn

Those are the 4 I'm certain about.  I think we carry 6 and the last 2 spots come down to Edwards, Pilares, and Adams.  One of them won't make it.  It'll come down to preseason in-game performance IMO.  I've given up on Gettis.  I hope he proves me wrong.  Bryant on the PS.

Some of you are really underestimating Hixon. He has a good chance to become the number 2, though I think Lafell still beats him out. Ginn as a wideout is no better than Louis Murphy.

1. Smitty

2. LaFell

3. Hixon

4. Ginn

2 and 3 may be switched around, but you can take the rest of that to the bank. As for number 5 and beyond, no one seems to deserve it. I guess I'll put Armani there, just because he can play special teams. It might be worth taking a flyer on someone like Lamont Bryant.

1. Steve Smith

2. Brandon LaFell

3. Domenik Hixon

4. Ted Ginn Jr

5. Armanti Edwards

6. Kealoha Pilares

7. Joe Adams

I would prefer Gettis and Bryant over Pilares and Adams. However, with Gettis' inability to get on the field and Bryant possibly having another year of practice squad eligibility (please correct me on that if I'm wrong) I can see them giving Pilares and Adams another season.

1 - Smith LaFell Hixon

2 - LaFell Hixon Gettis

3 - Hixon Gettis Ginn Adams

I feel like when im looking at my weapons, that is how I will attack. Smitty and LaFell will stand out the most as the most complete players who Cam is already very comfortable with. The talk of LaFell not getting separation is nonsense to anyone that has seen how shifty he is. LaFell is also generally a "safe" player to throw the ball to in that he is very agile in the air, has great hands, he's big, he fights to take the ball down and shields well. He's a decent runner with the ball too btw which gets him some of that sweet sweet yac. He may not have huge gaps of separation and he may not get a lot of yac but he gets enough.

Hixon will get the job done, but he's going to have to learn the offense with a new QB that has to learn him. I think Gettis could be the better talent and would think he would be useful as a gunner on ST's as well if not anyways.  We're going to find out about him this year. The next highest odds for me goes to Armanti. Substitute his name in for Gettis if #12 plays scared. There's really no reason I can see why he cant succeed at this level. He's just not my favorite option when looking at what Ive seen so far. Pilares is right there with him. There could be something there but certain areas have to improve for both of them before they can be relied on in this offense.

If Ginn turns out to be what we've been seeing all along then he's here for only ST's and I will bump Adams up that list of slot guys. I think he's been unlucky in games so far and he was trying to do too much. It's too early to cut him I think but if he doesnt do well do you go ahead and drop him in the PS. Not sure, but I think its going to be someone that can do something on ST's that wins that last spot. Of the remaining bunch who could win the 6th spot if we keep 6 I think. .  Adams is the best pure runner fumbling aside, Pilares is the fastest at top speed and is the most secure runner, and Armanti is the most natural receiver.

Bryant or Moss or anyone of those other guys could come in and show something special and that could throw the whole board off. The guys that have been around and know the offense have much better odds at securing a spot as opposed to just showing up big. If you fug up on game day, youre useless.

oh yah and . . . 89, bottom line

Everyone seems to be in agreement that the top 4 is pretty much set. So it comes down to those last two spots. 1 of those 2 has to be a returner, which is Pilares and Edwards. The other is open to debate.

The team really likes Pilares, and he can do STs. (Bonus points for doing returns and coverage) So I give him #5.

So to me, it is a TC battle between Edwards and Gettis. Ima give it to...wait for it...Edwards.

Basically, it is up to Barner. If he earns playing time, the last 2WRs, hellz, the last 3, won't see much action. We go 3 Wide and Barner could be in the slot. That makes a whole bunch of WRs not catching passes. Then again, we have a poo ton of WRs that can play in the slot. Who can make the plays?

Whomever shows some ability to make plays will play. I like the sound of that. I have faith in Pilares, hope for Barner, and meh for Edwards and Gettis. Adams has TC to earn a spot, I ain't holding my breath.

tl/dr version. Every WR we have could play the slot. So we could see a lot of guys rotate through there, as they all bring something different to the position. So maybe Gettis has a chance, as he is one of the true Wide Outs we have.

You guys have to account for what positions a guy is capable of playing. Many of those guys will never play the 1 or 2 because they simply physically cant.

Gettis is capable and knows the offense well at this point.

Doesn't change the fact that all indacations are pointing to Gettis being cut. This staff hasn't seemed to be very high on him. Several guys have repoted that they've heard he's as good as gone.

I know where not going into the season without depth at that spot, I think that means if he shows up in camp making plays then he makes it. Rivera did what he had to go with guys that are healthy, know the playbook, and dont put the ball on the ground so far. Gettis fits that bill despite whatever you or I have "heard". When its not even preseason yet Im going to go with just looking at the big picture logically.

We need guys that can play that 1 and 2 spot. Even if Hixon learns the offense fast enough do you think a coach should bet on him staying healthy? and thats your #1 backup? Smitty is aging and while he's still electric dynamite, he's going to get more and more prone to injuries. Who does that leave all of sudden. LaFell and uhmm. .  uhmm . . no one. Ginn hasnt shown that he can do it. I hope he's great in the slot but can I expect any more out of him this year? No, he'll contribute on ST's I would think.

None of the guys on this roster except those I named can play it imo. Maybe Armanti, we'll see, but thats asking for a big jump from what we've gotten so far from him. I've already seen Gettis do it, now he just needs to be healthy. Why would Rivera be in a rush to put him back on the field when he already had Murphy AND he had to test out Armanti Pilares and Adams to see what to do about those guys.

Gettis had to sit, there wasnt any room with all the projects we had on the roster. This is the year we'll find out whats up. So far, Im betting on #12 to be on the final 5 guys I would want on the roster by the time its said and done but we'll see in preason. Whoever said before that someone was going to end up nicked and on IR smells right if everyone stays healthy. Adams will get put on IR cause of a bruised toenail and we'll get to test him out again next year.

Every year WRs look good until the hitting begins. The only thing different from last year is we replaced Murphy with Hixon and Gettis is healthier but has not played in several years. Ginn is for special teams and unless he has dramatically changed will stay there. If Hixon can stay healthy we should be slightly improved.I do not see Adams making the roster.

My heart always drops when Lafell is listed as our best second option. I remember his longest touchdown against the Bucs, old man Smitty had to come across to lay a crucial block or else he would have been brought down lol.

Yea my knock on Lafell is he does not separate well enough to be a real factor.
