Can Jeff Taylor develop into a starting SG.

For those of you that think he can be our starting shooting guard.  I hope you are in other threads saying that we need to let Gerald Henderson walk in free agency and spend money on another position.  Because if he is as good as you guys say he is... we don't need Hendo.

 

Problem is... he is a backup and probably won't ever command starter money in free agency.

He'll play around 20-30 minutes every night, hang out around the 3 point line on offense while doing very little ball handling, and play defense on the best wing player.

 

If you want to classify that guy as a starter you can, either way he will be a solid role player.  Starting doesnt really matter, Ginobli came off the bench for years even though he was playing big minutes

Jeff Taylor has potential, but contrary to popular (Bobcat fans) belief, he was not a good defensive player last season. He was actually horrible in defense according to mySynergySports. Henderson and MKG were both much better. I still think that Taylor can develop into a good defender (I'm not sure I see him being a lock down defender), with a very reliable corner 3 ball. Last season Taylor shot 42.5% from the left corner and 39.1% from the right corner. He shot slightly less than 30% from above the break. 

 

I am a big fan of this guy and hope that he pans out and if he becomes a good 3 and D player getting 20 mpg or so... I will call that panning out. I'm looking for his defense and 3pt% to go up a good amount next season -- especially his defense.

I am a big fan of advanced statistics, but at his position, he was guarding the best player on the floor many of times on a defensively weak team, and don't think it would be fair to say he isn't a good defensive player due to last year stats.  Both him and MKG are going to be great perimeter defenders in the future.

I see what you are saying, and it probably isn't necessarily fair to say that Taylor was a "horrid" defensive player last season, but he did get torched last season defensively. MKG on the other hand was AMAZING defensively last season in his limited playing time as a rookie. MKG held opposing players to 28.6% from the field in ISO situations, 39.5% in PnR (handler), and 39.3% in post up plays. That was 19 year old rookie MKG -- already one of the best defensive players in the NBA. Henderson held opposing players to 32.3% from the field in ISO situations (and an even less PPP than MKG at .66 points per possession). I think the only thing that we can really say right now is that Taylor has a lot of defensive potential, but he also has a long way to go to really live up to it.

I want to make it clear, when I say that Taylor can be a starting SG, I am looking at the Spurs and 2011-12 Thunder. They have elite 6th men in Ginobli and Harden. We obviously don't have an elite 6th man, but Taylor could be every bit as good (or better) than Danny Green and Thabo Sefalosha. I really wish we would have traded back into the late lottery (having 2 picks, not trading our pick for a late lotto) for CJ McCollum. That could be a VERY interesting team. I'm not sure how far it would go in the future, but could potentially be very dangerous.

I think, at the minimum, he can serve as a back-up shooting guard in a pinch.

I loved Cj Mccollum and would not have been mad at 4 taking him...fans on the other hand.

McCollum will be better in the league than Noel or McLemore IMO.
