i went into that new HT on central ave today. wow what a totally different place then the last store. and they now have a rita's on the corner of central and i think plaza?

Yep, the Rita's has been here for over a year now and is in that Central/Plaza shopping center.

Panthro, if you think it was bad today, I'd hate to see what you would have done to that place on opening weekend.

I like the city and being around people but i dont like having a car in the city. I can't stand driving around a lot of people and always looking for parking places. So living around downtown or in ballyntyne is not for me. Too many cars in tight spaces.

Noda and plaza mid wood are spotty so just be sure you get on the right street.

My wife says she would rather deal with the SUV driving mom wasps of cotswold and SoPa than deal with that Teeter ....which is a little over a mile from us

I went the Monday night and it is laid out differently than most.

Davidson is very cool and is a far cry from the rat race of Charlotte proper.

Keep in mind:

"Among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, North Carolina has the highest rate of income tax on the first taxable dollar."

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/06/14/2955991/nc-is-an-unwanted-no-1-in-tax.html

Mecklenburg County's sales tax rate (7.25%) is second only to Durham and Orange Counties (7.5%).

http://www.sale-tax.com/NorthCarolina_counties

Mecklenburg County has the 8th highest property tax rate in the state at $.8166 per $100

http://www.dornc.com/publications/2011-12_countytaxrates.pdf

If one lived in Davidson, within Mecklenburg County, their combined property tax rate (city & county) would be well over $1.15 per $100 valuation. If one lived in Davidson within Iredell County, the same property would be taxed at a rate of $.8350 per $100 valuation. Start doing the math and you're talking about a $800 difference per year in property taxes on a $250k home, which is almost $70 a month added to your mortgage payment.

I like Charlotte, too, and have had the opportunity to move there on more than one occasion, but we've stayed away simply due to the city and county tax rates.

Davidson in mecklenberg has great schools, especially the Elementary. Not as good in Iredell.

For extra tax dollars you get these

http://www.zillow.com/huntersville-nc/schools/bailey-middle-school-47756/

Instead of these.

http://www.zillow.com/concord-nc/schools/northwest-cabarrus-high-school-56091/

http://www.zillow.com/concord-nc/schools/w-r-odell-elementary-school-56093/

If you don't have kids then it makes more sense. And you get more house in Iredell.

But I like downtown Davidson and the Iredell homes are getting to far out anyway.

If I were you, I'd keep looking into the Chapel Hill area if you like it. UNC basketball and even football season will be so much more lively than the sports like in Charlotte. Plus it's not difficult to hop on a bus or a train (or drive?) to Charlotte to catch the games.

If you're looking to raise the family, Cary might be a place to look into. It seems really boring and monotonous to someone my age, but I think it's either the safest or at least one of the top 5 safest cities in America, and the place is loaded with families, good schools, etc etc.

Last but not least, Wilmington. Mainly because I grew up in Wilmington and I still call it home even though I don't spend much time here anymore, but it's a brilliant place to live. You wont meet people in Wilmington that don't love living in Wilmington, and you will hear people all over the state talking about how they wished they lived in Wilmington. It's really easy going and of course you've got the beach.

Then again, I'm talking down on Charlotte when I really just don't know much about the area, but I'm sure there are places in Charlotte that would be good for all the same reasons as well.

Move to the lake, south park/myers park, ballentyne, dilworth any where else is extremely hit or miss.

Also lol at anyone recommending NoDa for buying/renting. That area is fine for dinner or a show but it is within walking distance of the WORST neighborhood in Charlotte. Have fun getting robbed every time you go out of town.
