Harbaugh flipped the fug out on a reporter wearing a 9ers shirt, back when he was with the Chargers. I guarantee he does not like this.

Fashion statment or not, it is dumb. And the reaction to the criticism is worse. Kap is the face and the leader of the 49ers. He's following in the footsteps of HOFers. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. Especially not just to look fashionable. Poo like this is ammo that WILL be used against him.

Perhaps not with all, but quite a few people the word "thug" has taken on a pretty obvious connotation in it's use describing athletes. Especially when you have individuals like MrTD roaming around here spouting off with it.

no, it is because you are basing your assumption on the way someone dresses.i put a pic of Capone up because he is a thug but dressed in suits. which means you cannot judge someone based on the way he is dressed.

true, but minorities get called negative names because the way they dress when that is the urban culture. in the 20s and 30s thugs wore suits but if you see a guy in a suit he is considered a business man.

 

I happen to think certain people, those who just don't vibe with rap and certain styles of dress, are given all too easy of a stereotype when rap music has such a large light shed on it.  It's deeply ingrained in this culture and, if somehow makes it past this trapp music bullshit, will continue to stick around. 

 

Most people make a judgement on things pretty quick, it's basic human nature.  We all do it no matter what anyone tries to tell themselves.  It's how your brain works.  Always analyzing and trying to create a shorter path of memorization. 

 

When people from a distance get a view of pants below the waist, long ass shirts, extremely baggy pants and in the same moment hear some lyrics that happen to pop on the radio from 2chainz, or name a rapper anymore..  Especially Wayne..  Talking about "fug bitches", drugs, and guns..  it makes too easy of a target when a large part of the urban culture has deeply rooted a certain fashion sense. 

 

it's not like there's much true hip-hop on the radio helping to sway the negative you mention..

If you happen to fall on the OLD side of the curve you tend to over reach and stereotype MUCH more than someone who falls on the YOUNG side of the curve.

The more I think about this, the more I appreciate the irony that one group of people are really worked up because they care a lot about the symbolism of the hat and don't really get the fashion, and one group of people are worked up because they care a lot about the fashion of the hat and don't really get the symbolism. 

 

The question really comes down to, is a team hat primarily an expression of fashion or a symbolic representation of a team? I say primarily because I think it's clearly a bit of both. I think the trouble here is that Colin clearly is only concerned about the fashion aspect and doesn't really understand why people who only see the symbolic aspect are so worked up. 

 

In short, what Colin should have done is said something like:

 

"I appreciate the concern from fans about me wearing Dolphin's hat the other day. To me, it was a fashion accessory which happened to fit the look I was going for. I understand how not everyone views it this way. So rest assured, I meant no disrespect to my team, my city, or our fans. Being the QB for the 49ers has been my dream since I was 9 years old. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this organization, and I've got love for all of y'all."

 

Instead he went with:

Ugh. May as well move this thread to the tinderbox now. I've been called a cracker, I laughed. It's not remotely comparable to someone being called the N word. Cracker doesn't have a long appalling irreversible history with it.
