Peppers signed his tender (per WFNZ)

To me I think Trgo was the issue. If we see Pep sign a long term deal, I don't see how that wasn't the issue, especially since that dude is now a DLine coach again... I think him being "maxed out in Carolina" really means "maxed out under Trgo". I find it hard to see it any other way, for example, such as () needing to go to a 3-4 was more about what he'd like to do since he wanted traded than with him being able to grow more as a player.

Apparently you're not familiar with hyperbole. Don't be so sensitive, especially since you purposely take contrarian stances regularly you should know statements like this are gonna happen.

Based on his actions after the hiring of Meeks it definitely looks now that it was a "wait and see" kind of thing and now that OTAs are done he had a better picture of what he was dealing with. He went about it entirely the wrong way though.

Of course there will be a cap if not next year then in the future. Plus there are a number of things built into the current agreement which will incent players and owners to put in a salary cap. The late Gene Upshaw said that if they didn't reach an agreement next year that there wouldn't be one but that was rhetoric not fact.

If I remember correctly (didn't want to read all 360 odd pages again) there are still some limitations which keep teams from spending wildly. For example the top 8 clubs (playoff clubs) next year can't spend above a 30% increase over this year's cap number. So it eliminates power teams from getting more powerful. There are some other things as well.

I think that playoff teams can only sign one or two FA's also

The rule is that the four teams in the championship games can only sign a UFA if they lose a FA first. They are allowed to sign players released from other teams or their own players.

The other 4 playoff teams have the same prohibition but can sign some FAs based on certain salary restrictions. The restrictions limit their ability to sign top tier FAs.

Here is a good summary for 2009 and 2010 implications.

The word definitely doesn't appear, but you sounded pretty confident to me.

Not really. This situation is different. It's not about money at all and pepers has said so according to the board hero Darin Gantt himself as late as yesterday afternoon. This guy wants out of here and we were stupid enough to think we could change his mind if we trapped him.

But the script has been flipped. Our hardball approach goes in vain because as of now there are no sniffs and the only thing the pro-tagging contingent can cuddle up with is a FEELING that "...meh, Free Agency wasn't all that great this year anyway"

Tagging Foster....BOMB!!!....This tagging has the potential to be MUCH worse.

..sigh indeed

Delhomme, Beason: Welcome back, Julius

If the reaction of two Panthers leaders is any indication, defensive end Julius Peppers can expect a warm reception from his teammates when training camp begins in early August.

"Not surprised at all about Julius," quarterback Jake Delhomme said by text message about the news that Peppers had signed a one-year tender with the team on Wednesday. "All of us will be elated he will be present on the first day of camp."

Linebacker Jon Beason writes on his blog that he feels the same way:

"We’re glad to have JP back and I think he’s happy, too. In some ways that’s the way I expected the procedure to unfold. The Panthers would have had to trade him for lesser value because his value is through the roof. A team would have had to give up several high draft picks and then pay him close to $100 million, so it’s a double edged sword.

"It’s been great getting to know Pep as a person the last few years and to see him play in games is unbelievable. He’s such a specimen, such as freak, he’s so gifted and talented it’s unbelievable. He’s definitely the most talented lineman I’ve ever seen and maybe the most talented player." -- David Scott

so ya got..nuthin

thanks for trying anyway. You are not even on topic. That was in reference to him NOT signing the LAST long term deal he was offered. Care to dispute that? It is easy to discern from him turning that deal down and the fact that he SAYS he wants out that .....he wants out. Not rocket science here. And that is all that the statement said. How much time did yo spend looking for that btw?.....lmao!

In no way does that mean anything close to "He will definitely never sign a long-term deal with the Panthers"

brandumb-- I mean -DONE was just acting out because he is not intelligent enough or mature enough to rebut sensibly.

Game, Set, Match. Winner: Marty Hurney.

Hurney used the franchise tag exactly as it's meant to be used, and now the Panthers have exactly the outcome that they wanted (Julius signed, ready to go and willing to talk long term deal). When I read the stories out now, I can almost hear the Mortal Kombat voice saying "Flawless Victory".

(cut that in with a graphic of Hurney giving the uppercut to Carl Carey)

I'd add that for as much as many of us have lamented the fact that Peppers didn't have a real agent, in the end that may have worked to the Panthers favor. A real agent might have been a more difficult opponent, might actually have worked harder to get Peppers out of town, might have talked holdout; who knows? Perhaps from the Panthers perspective, it's better this way.

Whether keeping Peppers is what individual fans wanted or not , it was in the end what the team wanted. Debate that decision if you will, but what can't be debated is that in the face off between GM and agent, the GM won...easily.

you can believe that there is a winner all you want and relate it to antiquated gaming too if it makes you giddy but the truth of the matter is that nobody won here. Not yet. The effort on the field will prove if this decision was a good one or not and not until then can anyone intelligently claim one side or the other as achieving even an upper hand much less victory.

Try again. Get back to us when you are ready.
