Rivera confirms interest in Mikell

Panthers coach Ron Rivera confirmed Thursday the team has interest in free agent safety Quintin Mikell, who was in Philadelphia when Rivera was an Eagles' assistant.

“Without getting into details, I think there's a little curiosity and that's about as much as I can say about that,” Rivera said before teeing off at a celebrity golf tournament hosted by Bobcats president Fred Whitfield.

Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com reported last week the Panthers and Mikell were talking, and a deal could be done soon.

Mikell, 32, has been a starter for six of his 10 NFL seasons, the last two with St. Louis. The Boise State product is an in-the-box safety who has finished with 75 tackles or more the past three seasons.

He would represent an upgrade over the Panthers' current candidates at strong safety, a field that includes undrafted rookie Robert Lester, free agent acquisition Mike Mitchell, second-year pro D.J. Campbell and Haruki Nakamura, who was benched midway through last season.

The Panthers report to training camp at Wofford in two weeks.

“He can play. He's a good football player,” Rivera said of Mikell. “We'll see how things go. It's still early. We've got a couple weeks left to go.”

That is invigorating isn't it? Nothing says I'm a fan like "excuse me sir but my 17 month old is trying to sleep".

I scored box seats during the Seahawks game from work and took one of my friends with me. It was shitty weather but we were inside from the rain. Prob 10 people in there with us. Family in front of us had like 17 blankets and were bundled up like they were in Alaska. Didn't move the entire game. Every time my buddy and I tried to get hype and bang the empty seats the dad and little snot nosed kid would glare at us like we were disturbing them. We were hammered so we didn't care.

so basically the story is this.

someone asks person about mikell and person goes, "huh what?" but tries to act like he knows what the one asking is talking about and throws out a blanket "i guess not" and then on his own goes "o crap, did i miss something? i guess i'm going to have to work for a little while" and then googles "quinten mikell panthers" and finds out that there was some interest and then goes and asks rivera about it (or finds out that someone had and tried to get them to tell him what rivera said) and then points out an old tweet.

job done for the week.

I actually had opposing fans join with me in mocking the people sitting around in the section.  They could not believe how docile everyone was and we were Wining!  The whole time no one would even look our way.  I finally told the guys that I was ashamed of those people and that they had to believe me when i said we actually do have hardcore fans.  The look that they gave me cut right to my core, it was like, "Sure little fella, we believe you."  They would have tousled my hair and patted me on the head if they could have.

in defense of person...it's not like the panthers are exactly open about anything, esp. with gettleman. we haven't had one clue about anything he's done so far. contract restructures...FA pickups...whatever, he's got that org. tightlipped, not that it wasn't always closed off about what it's doing.

HOWEVER...the observer had a guy who had sources and could find out some stuff and they let him go and replaced him with a guy who has NO sources.

It's not person's fault he's crappy at getting info and sharing it. ok...maybe it is his fault, but that's besides the point. the observer made a crappy hire to be their beat reporter.

when you hire a guy to report on a team, here's where you start...get a guy who knows people or who can get to know people quickly. if they have to breathe through their mouths and wear socks with sandals, it might not be a good sign.

I do feel like the bashing of Joe Person is sometimes over the top. And I agree that the organization probably doesn't make it easy to get information.

That said, what makes it tough to be all that sympathetic is the fact that reporters from much further away (Ravens Insider for example) seem to have no trouble getting scoops.

If they can get it, why can't he?
