You forgot this segment of the crowd, such as me. Don't think I'd pay full price to see it, but if it comes on HBO or I find it in Redbox while browsing, I'd certainly give it a whirl.

I would say that but since its best quality is the special effects then don't you think it should be seen in theatres? I enjoyed avatar on the big screen but seeing it on tv there's literally nothing special about it.

I'll leave it at this: I know, and I think most people here who want to see PR are not expecting it to be a good movie. It's a big budget, sci-fi action, CGI heavy, summer blockbuster. No one here is expecting the Godfather. And perhaps the haters have misunderstood my love for GdT. The fact that this is made by the same guy who directed Pan's Labyrinth and the Devil's Backbone doesn't make me think this is going to get an Oscar nod. Far from it. The reason I want to see it, is because GdT, come hell or high water makes an entertaining film. And that's what I want out of a big budget summer movie.

 

It's gotten to the point where big budget summer blockbusters are so bad, that I can't even turn off my brain, sit back in the chair and drool into my lap, saying that it was worth my $14 because it was entertaining. Honestly, when I watched transformers, I was nauseous. There was so much crap going on on the screen that I felt ill. Even when the goal is to go in and have our mind numbed by a gratuitous visual spectacle, shouldn't we demand some sort of standard for quality? Shouldn't we expect to see something we've never seen before?

 

Hellboy 2, by no means is it an amazing film, or even ranked amongst my favorites, but you know what? I got it on BluRay, and I watch it when I need a pick me up. It's undeniably entertaining. And even in a movie where GdT didn't bring his A-game, he still showed us some wild and ingenious things. The troll market was amazing, but the scene that sticks with me, is two love struck, Mexi-beer-drunk superheroes singing Barry Manilow. It was an entirely fresh perspective on the Super Hero genre.

 

And in Pacific Rim, I expect the same thing. I not only expect to see a twist on the giant monster/mecha genre, but I expect to see his twist on the entire idea of the summer, big budget blockbuster. And Hollywood desperately needs that.

 

And what GdT does better than anyone else; he takes unusual, and often unsavory premises, or projects that would otherwise be doomed to fail, and makes them entertaining. Honestly, what other respectable director would touch Blade II with a 30 foot pole? And the great thing about him going where no director dares to, is we the movie going audience gets to see something fresh, instead of what producers are sure is going to turn a profit (Ever wonder why there are 30 zombie movies a year? Because it's a proven commodity. People go to see them. MAKE MORE!!!)

 

So I'm watching this, because I think GdT will do a summer movie right, and show us something new and fresh, and exciting. Or do you just want to keep seeing Vin Diesel drive a ricer through exotic locales with the Rock shooting at him?

 

If it's the former rather than the latter, you should be lined up opening night to see Pacific Rim.

Guillermo del Toro has achieved a feat of world building unseen on movie screens sinceStar Wars. This is a rich, full, detailed universe that lives at the very corner of the frame. Pacific Rim is set in the kind of fully realized world where you believe if the camera went down a different corridor or street, you would find a rich story populated with fascinating characters. There are sequences in Pacific Rim that have the same depth of construction as the Mos Eisley cantina scene in Star Wars, that have the sense of a place that existed before the camera turned on and will continue existing after our heroes have moved along.

If that was all Pacific Rim offered it would stand as a Star Wars for a new generation. But it has more than that. It’s the rare modern blockbuster that does big scale action correctly. Every punch has momentum, every impact has weight, every step of the Jaegers and the kaiju is felt. The action, while often taking place at night, is clear and understandable. The stakes are always palpable and high, and the action is constantly thrilling. There are a number of enormous set pieces with one - a kaiju attack on Hong Kong - being one of the greatest action sequences of this century, not only in terms of visceral thrill but also storytelling quality.

 

What makes Pacific Rim work isn’t one character or Jaeger or kaiju (although I think we’ll all have our favorites for sure), it’s the way del Toro and Beacham bring them all together. This is a movie about teamwork, about sacrifice and about getting past the bullshit to do something important and difficult. It’s a rousing movie about the way human beings can set their mind to something and accomplish it. Yeah, we’ve fuged up. Yeah, we’ve made mistakes. But we’ve also done incredible things, performed impossible feats and tamed some of the very forces of nature. When we’re at our worst we can be destructive, divisive and horrible. When we’re at our best we can change the course of the world with our will.

Pacific Rim is a movie about that is, thrillingly, upliftingly about that. And it also has giant mechs punching the poo out of giant monsters. This is what blockbuster movies should be.

that's all i needed to hear. you're going to see it because it's a cgi heavy hollywood action flick. fair enough, my personal opinion, and i don't mean to insult anyone who thinks otherwise, is that the action in this movie looks fuging stupid. hell, i saw 2 of the transformer movies in theatres, not because i expected them to be good, but entertaining in one way or another.

other posts made it seem like people thought it was going to be some great cinematic masterpiece.

Moviehuddle is like 99% of the no name critics that see the movie during the official release like the general public.

The early reviewers dictate the narrative that all of the other critics will parrot as if they came to the exact same conclusion point for point just by chance, only they try to one up each other by how snarky they can be to get more traffic with their review.

Then moviehuddle and the rest of the internet will pile on even further telling everyone just how great/ how much a movie sucks without ever seeing it for themselves because they read some bullshit on an aggregate site.

For fugs sake think for yourselves.
