This movie...I AM SO EXCITED!!!

 

I mean, when I first saw the trailers forever ago, I was like "A non-crappy Gozdilla homage?"  Then it became the destruction pr0n that Transformers should have been AND a homage to Godzilla movies!!!

 

I don't expect much of a story, or anything in the way of constipated faces on the screen between the massive amount of crap being wrecked.  I just want my eyeballs melted, my brain pummeled, and an idiot's grin on my face when the credits roll.

 

I finally feel like there is a movie truely worth the cost of going to the movies for the bombastic audio and 2 story video...

 

Yes, I am easily entertained, and I LOVE Del Torro's work.  Pan's Labyrinth was one of my favorites!

Last night, gf and I are watching TV. Trailer for Pacific Rim comes on. We watch for 30 seconds. Trailer ends, and gf remarks how fugging stupid it looks, and she has no interest in seeing it. Shrugs her shoulders at the pathetic offering of summer movies. In the rant that follows, the names "Battleship," "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe" get bandied about. I tell her generally I would agree. However, I am still giving the movie a chance because the director isn't Michael Bay, it's not a Jerry Bruckheimer productions; it's Guillermo del Toro. Her eyes go wide, she stares blankly back at the TV, obviously playing the trailer over again in her head, except now taking into account the GDT slant. She remarks, "I must admit I'm slightly intrigued now." Within another minute we have already decided that we are locked in to see this movie.

 

And that's when I realized that GDT is an amazing director, if not the best director working today. No other director could do that, I think. No other director could make you look at a movie that looks like total trash, and then totally change your opinion of if because of his name alone. Not Spielberg, not Scorsese, not Allen. No one else could convince me wholesale that a movie that looks like crap is actually worth seeing. No one else would I give the benefit of the doubt. Only Guillermo del Toro.

 

He doesn't make the best movies. He doesn't make the highest grossing movies, but he's got a rare skill; the ability to bring you into his imagination and let you crawl around in there for a while. And I can't wait to see what he throws at us next.

I'm confused.

He's a great producer. 

 

Has Guillermo del Toro made a good film? The Hell Boy series sucked. Blade 2 was ok. Haven't seen Pans Labyrinth, but have no plans to.

Your last sentence is telling when you just listed mostly dumb, loud movies and shoulder shrug.. But hey someone has to see Fast n Furious 6.

Pan's Lab is a masterpiece... But it is subtitled so JB fans are not so adept at reading will become frustrated and not catch key plot points.

He is an interesting director and his american projects are what they are. The Orphanage is good too.

From everything I've read the movie is awesome and the only bad part is Charlie Hunham.

The Hellboy movies SHOULD have sucked, but instead those movies are pretty awesome and he did a great job putting them into film, IMO.  The visuals are amazing and I think he delivers on what to expect from a movie on this.  Pans is amazing and you can't even make a decision on his career without seeing this movie, come on.

That being said, Bruck had some good stuff too.

Agreed about Hellboy... I do not own the movie or talk about it ever..but when it is on I am drawn to it visually bc the creature design and all are unique and I love the Del Toro worlds.

The Devil's Backbone is also great...his horror and fantasy in his native tounge is his greatest creation.

Chris Nolan, QT, Del Toro all are content producers as well as stylized directors and that is what should be supported. They create worlds and have their style...Del Toro needs a domestic Pan's Lab bc merican's dont like reading... He would have made me go watch the Hobbit if he got to direct it...but it would have been dark.

I completely shot this down as a Michael Bay Robo-tech meets Godzilla, until I saw that del Toro was directing. That alone causes me to think I'll at least watch it, probably not until Redbox or HBO, but I'll give it a shot at least.

 

Plus, even if it's a bit role, it has Ron Perlman. I'm convinced.
