HR phone interview question. I broke my own rule of salary talk.

Had a phone interview today and the guy asked what I was making then followed up with what I was looking for. This was a nice 1-2 combo as I'm usually of the mindset he who mentions salary first loses because you set the bar from that point. I gave him a range of what I was making and kept it on the high end of that range when he asked what I wanted to make?

Or. Much ado about nothing?

The hr person is just making sure you fit within the salary grade the position is rated at for that company. As long as you were honest, saves everyone time.

I was in a final interview for a sweet medical equipment sales job...and I skirted around the money issue and totally lost out on the position bc i did not say I want that cash!!

I have noticed like Zod said...it is now commonplace to get your salary and in some cases if you made more they will thank you and move on to another canidate.

In case you all are not aware, most medium to large companies have a grading scale for all their positions. There are usually 10 or so of them

There may be 100 different job titles, but they all fit within one of those 10 grades.

For instance....

Customer Service Rep may be an H1 which pays a range 24-35k a year. Meaning no one in that job grade makes over 35 a year. It also means that if you are applying for that job and want 36k, you won't be considered. The trick is to try to get in as close to the 35k you can and bypass the years of 7 percent increases that gets you there.

I've just reached the conclusion that I am now going to be actively looking as well. When I asked for a bump they just stared at me and tried to down play what I've done the last 3 years.

They only way to go any higher where i amis to marry into the family that owns it and they are fresh out of suitors and I'm maxed out on earning potential as they don't want me making more than people that have been there 10 years.

So this horse will be looking for a new turnip cart to hitch on to. ..

    • Last year the Commanders OL gave up 65 sacks same as us. Sam Howell who is now holding a clipboard for another team had the 12th most passing yards through all that and Ron Rivera as his head coach. Now Bryce Young has an OL that has given up 28 sacks amongst the lowest in the NFL this season and he is still 31st in passing yards. And that's considered an "improvement". The excuses are beyond stale.
    • Here comes Frankw and his pathetic little persecution complex to claim I have a personal vendetta against one of the worst performing coaches in the league if anything I should love Canales because he’s walking proof that through the lord all things AREN'T possible.  This kind of performance is exactly what you’d expect from someone who filled the building with misunderstood Bible quotes about iron forging iron and inspired speeches about how he apologized for his infidelity by buying his wife a book deal.  once more into the breech dear friends, just like when I paid a stripper for an above the pants hand job in Orlando.
    • As dumb as it probably sounds, we should have won that game.  Defense was bad but Bryce should have been better.  Pass rush isn't a good enough excuse.
