Could our offense be competitive with the Saints and the Falcons O?

Answer Yes!! Why not? As I compare our position player too both of these teams (who feel like they have high powered Offences) position player. I only see them having a edge in the QB and TE position. We are better at the RB and Oline spots. Plus we have a slight edge in the Wideout position. So why shouldn't we be consider as a high power offence? Is it all on Jake? Jake is the only QB in this division who led his team too a Superbowl and 2 NFCC games. All the talking head dump on Jake for the Zona game but none mention him coming off a surgery that no QB has comeback from. Less mention that it's usually the 2nd season off tommy john that a MLB pitcher is fully recovered. So who not too say that Jake is a lot stronger and more accurate this season being the 2nd off his surgery. Last point is I think Davidson hit his stride at the end of last season. Now he has a better handle on how too run a offence and more trust from fox. Not too mention a few more weapons added (goodson, Ryne, Fiammetta and Gary B). I think we are being underestimated and we will make alot of teams pay with a top 10 maybe even top 5 offence.

Just my opinion but what do you think?

the absence of an elite passer and the preferences of Fox keep up from being a "high powered, elite offense."

however, due to our o line and running backs, we're a "bruising, punishing offense."

this lesson in football has been brought to you by John Madden.

"High-powered" offenses like the Saints are flashy, but I think history has shown that a dominant running team that can wear down the other team's defense and keep the opposing offense off the field is about as desirable an offense as you can get.

It's not a question of offensive ranking or points, but of effectiveness. In that light, I think the Panthers have one of the most effective offenses in the league.

I'd say that the Panthers offense did more than just compete last year. They had the 7th highest scoring offense in the entire league last year and there is no reason for them not to be better this year, barring a rash of injuries anyway.

we were 7th in points

we were tied for 3rd in total TDs with the cards and behind only the chargers and saints

we were 5th in yards per play

we were 10th in offensive yardage

we were 21st in time of possession.

if that isn't high powered i'm not sure what it. we hit, we hit hard, we hit fast.

With the recent Super Bowl victories by the pass-oriented Steelers, Colts, Patriots, plus the fact that the NFL is pretty much a pass-dominated league, I disagree.

The Steelers run a balanced offense, they typically don't like being forced to throw the ball but the offensive line was so bad they had no choice. Also considering how good their defense is it really doesn't matter. The Colts were the first passing offense to win since the Rams way back when. When the Patriots were winning Super Bowls their offense was extremely balanced and relied heavily on the run.

Let's not forget the run-first offenses like the Giants and Ravens who have won in this decade as well. Balanced offenses do MUCH better than passing offenses, no matter how you look at it.

EDIT: Just to add on, when the Patriots were the most pass oriented (07) also happened to coincide with the only SB they lost.... to a running team. Hmm...

steelers pass oriented?

:frown2:

they were 20th in passing attempts and completions with 506 and 303.

17th in yardage with 3301 and 18th in passing TDs with a whopping 19

meanwhile

9th in rushing attempts with 460 but 23rd in yardage with 1690

11th in rushing TDs with 16.

they were 29th in yards per rushing attempt. they relied on the passing game to get them somewhere because no matter how many times they ran the ball they weren't getting anywhere. just because they did rely on it doesn't mean they were particularly good at it. their offense was bad. they won in spite of it. it was their defense that did it fort them.

The bolded part is the one thing they really need to work on. Despite running the ball as much as they did, they still scored very quickly a lot of times, which kind of hurt the defense a little bit.

BTW, remember how anxious everybody was about this time last year, when we knew that every starter on the O-line was either gonna be starting for the first time (Kalil and Otah) new to the team (Vincent) or playing different positions from the year before (Gross and Wharton)? This will be the first time in years that they will be returning every starter at the same position from the year before, and I'm very excited about that.

Patriots are a completely different animal than the Saints. The Patriots won when their running game gave them a balanced attack. Also, the Patriots use the short passing game as an extension of their running game.

Teams that air it out and have prolific passign games have not fared well winning SB's.

i agree. i don't see that as being a bad thing totally but i would like to see us controlling the clock a lot more. takes away time that the offense have to come back. as good as the running game is, they are going to have to have the passing game slow it down.

fortunately(?) i think that because of the tougher defenses we are playing that ToP might come down naturally. i think the scoring and big plays still come, it will just take longer to get to them.

Colts and Pats never won SBs with their top passing offense years. The Steelers? Pass oriented? They had a craptacular run game but their pass offense was not high powered at all. It was efficient when it needed to be.

Yeah, and all of those teams played great defense too. Even the Colts defense was better in the play offs during their SB run than the offense was. It seems like a lot of fans have forgotten that part.

During the the last 7 game stretch, we only scored under 30 once and that was 28. We scored 30+ a total of 8 games winning all of them. Our offense carried the team during that stretch when the defense eroded. With Williams taking big plays to the house, it was almost like having a great pass attack. It will be up to Jake to bounce back and be the leader of the offense again, with the weapons of Williams and Smitty, and the other role players we should be good, along with the o line. I think if Davidson is allowed to do a little more by being aggressive, we should be just fine. Our playaction was great last year, seemed like Jake had minutes to find the open guy, and especially those misdirection playactions finding Rosario or Williams out of the backfield was nice new treat to see. Just depends on the leash that Fox has on Davidson will be how offensive we can be. We just need to keep the defense off the field and have a few more of them 7+ minute drives each game and we can be a balanced team.

    • Bad teams are generally thin at most positions and it takes time to build the reserves.  I think Morgan put a lot of stock in Wonnum producing and this has been a big disappointment.  Brown and Shaq's injuries were significant and despite what us fans say, the defense is much better with Shaq on the field.
    • Wallace is still raw won't really know anything until at least next season. I'm going to be brutally honest and say other than Coker who seems to be developing by sheer determination and a chip on his shoulder for going undrafted I've seen very little development from the wide receivers this season. That's one of my biggest issues with Canales and his staff. Really need to see some strong bright spots for the second half of the season. All we know for certain on the subject that is the Young vs Stroud saga is that Tepper pushed for Bryce he told us even well before the draft he spoke to Bryce and informed him he wanted him to be a Panther. Like I said. We have only a small sample size by which to judge Morgan's tendencies in the draft. Have to wait until next year for more answers. But he needs multiple homerun picks in the next two drafts if he's going to be successful here. Even shitty Marty Hurney had some of those.
    • You are right to target DT---our DTs are on skates.  Brown and another stud would allow us to bring along edge rushers and get by without studs on the outside.  In my view, a DT who can collapse the pocket and keep the qb in front of him is more valuable than a stud Edge (would you rather have a Chris Jones or a Bosa?  To me, Brown and a stud DT would make the edge rushers and ILBs better.
