Keeping Up With The Bobcats Salary Space

Recommended Posts

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/07/04/4147645/charlotte-bobcats-al-jefferson.html

Jefferson can’t formally be signed (and the Bobcats can’t comment) until the NBA’s moratorium period ends on July 10. The Bobcats have informed power forward Tyrus Thomas that he will be waived under the NBA’s amnesty provision once the moratorium ends.

Using amnesty on Thomas means the remaining two seasons and approximately $18 million on Thomas’s contract won’t count against the Bobcats’ salary cap. It’s difficult to precisely calculate the Bobcats’ projected payroll after dropping Thomas and adding Jefferson. But it appears to be roughly $46 million (including Henderson’s qualifying offer as a restricted free agent).

Next season’s salary cap is projected at about $58.5 million per team.

I still don't understand how the heat can 3 players with max contracts which should take up over 75% of their entire salary yet they still have money to sign basically anyone they want.

We don't even have one max contract and yet we're basically broke.

Here is what each players contract is slated to pay him next year...

Al Jefferson: 13,500,000

Ben Gordon: 13,200,000

Ramon Sessions: $5,000,000

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: $4,809,840

Bismack Biyomob: $3,217,680

Kemba Walker: $2,709,720

Brendan Haywood: $2,000,000

Jeff Adrien: 916,099

Jeff Taylor: $788,872

Add that up and you get: $46,142,211

Gerald Henderson (Guestimate Contract): $8,000,000

Cody Zeller (Guestimate Contract): $3,894,240

Add those up and you get: $11,894,240

Add the two totals and you get: $58,036,451

Subtract $58,500,000 (Salary Cap) from the Bobcats Total Salary $58,036,451: $463,549 in cap room

Welcome to cap hell Bobcat fans!!!

I don't really see how it's cap hell with Henderson, Gordon, and Sessions coming off the books after this season. We may go into the luxury for one year so that we can sign an all star level big. I'd say it's worth it.

They go into the luxury tax plus a lot of the role players take pay cuts to play for them. Also James, Wade and Bosh make a little less then the Maximum contract for their years.   For instance next season they have over 85 million committed towards the cap. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/miami.htm

We will most likely re-sign Sessions, and next year you are going to want to think about re-signing Biyombo and Walker. Biz will receive a deal around the five million dollar range and Kemba could be looking at a deal around the $11,000,000 dollar range. That would literally be most of our cap room for next year.

I've pretty much said everything that he said, except I just proved that his numbers are inaccurate. I am willing to almost guarantee that the $46 million does not include Henderson's qualifying offer.

Why?

Well for starters I detailed it out for you in an above post. Secondly the Bobcats sent out an email to their season ticket holders that they would have $21 million in cap space (with the amnestying of Tyrus Thomas).

If you add Jefferson's contract of $13.5 million and replace Tyrus Thomas' eight million dollar contract with Getald Henderdon's eight million dollar contract, you get $21 million dollars....

Bonnell is wrong on this one.

I wouldn't worry too much, there is a lot of things NBA teams can do to get wiggle room.  I expect Jordan to pursue those if needed since we signed Jefferson, it basically means he's OK spending more money if it can help us.

The Heat have 3 guys making 20+ mill each, if we really wanted to spend some money I'm pretty sure we can.  I doubt we will though but I wouldn't worry about keeping what we have and hopefully grabbing some decent bench players.

I doubt we re-sign Kemba next offseason, and I know we wont re-sign Biyombo

Guys on rookie deals dont really agree to extensions after 3 years unless they are a max guy where there is no negotiating on the contract

I think they love Kemba so unless he regresses this season he will be extended..if he could just attack like Tony Parker off pick and rolls with Zellar and Jefferson like the Spurs do...that would be ideal and Explosive....please come through Zellar...I want to like you so much.

He has 2 more years on his rookie deal, why extend him next year?
