Keeping Up With The Bobcats Salary Space

Recommended Posts

I don't mean to scare people lol... but my original numbers were off and we are damn near at the salary cap.

The site I was using did not factor in qualifying and non-guaranteed contracts so I had to actually adds those.

Essentially, if Gerald Henderson asks for more than $8,000,000 we won't be able to afford him.

Lol, I hear ya...

This is what that NBA.com analyst meant when he said that we had to amnesty Tyrus Thomas to Jefferson...

I love Henderson, but $8,000,000 for him may not be worth being stuck in cap hell...

Hopefully we can get him for $6,500,000 or less (which is doubtful).

We're also stuck in a predicament with Jeff Adrien, because if you cut him; we're at exactly 10 players.

So, the Bobcats are in the same position as the Mavericks. With those draft picks and having to resign players, it's almost a given that this current team build will go into the luxury tax.  :startle: I'm not even sure if the team as currently built is good enough to win 30 games, so there's that nice relative tidbit. They need to sign two more players and have just enough room to give out two minimum level deals.

Here is what each players contract is slated to pay him next year...

Al Jefferson: 13,500,000

Ben Gordon: 13,200,000

Ramon Sessions: $5,000,000

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: $4,809,840

Bismack Biyomob: $3,217,680

Kemba Walker: $2,709,720

Brendan Haywood: $2,000,000

Jeff Adrien: 916,099

Jeff Taylor: $788,872

Add that up and you get: $46,142,211

Gerald Henderson (Guestimate Contract): $8,000,000

Cody Zeller (Guestimate Contract): $3,894,240

Add those up and you get: $11,894,240

Add the two totals and you get: $58,036,451

Subtract $58,500,000 (Salary Cap) from the Bobcats Total Salary $58,036,451: $463,549 in cap room

Welcome to cap hell Bobcat fans!!!

We realistically need a back-up power forward (Josh McRoberts) to complete the roster...

We will most likely be going into the luxury tax to fill out the roster... Going into the luxury tax is not necessarily a bad thing (you do have to pay the league for every dollar amount you are over), but it's embarrassing when you suck...

After doing some research, I think we will be alright...

Because Gerald Henderson is a restricted free agent and the NBA features a soft cap rather than a hard cap, the Bobcats will be able to keep Henderson because of this thing called Bird Rights.

Bird rights allow teams to exceed the salary cap to retain their own players.

Since the Bobcats own Henderdon's bird rights, they can exceed the salary cap to retain him.

However, by technicality; if the Bobcats want to sign anyone else, they need to do it before Gerald Henderson signs. If they sign someone after Gerald Henderson signs, that will put us in the luxury tax.

I hope this helps a little.

I don't see Hendo being a long term answer and that probably is how the FO sees it too. If he's lucky and sign elsewhere for more that's good for him but don't think Cho is going to give him anything more than 6 mil. He's just not worth that price and more than likely he will be replace especially with how this team is being built right now. SG is the needed position next year.
