Police arrest man for filming raid, then shoot his dog in front of him (NSFW)

First two cops were totally in the wrong... he had every right to be there filming...

Dog owner was in the wrong for not properly securing his dog, which actually did kinda lunge at the cop...

Formula for tragedy often ends in tragedy.

Sad situation.

First two cops should be fired. Dog owner should be released with no charges (if there even were any).

Not too sure any compensation should be doled out for the dog, as I feel the cop that killed it was justified.

Anyone's dog that lunges at me like that, and I'm carrying, is getting shot too.

The grey area is where the whole situation could have been avoided on both parties' (the cops and the dog owner) levels.

The dog wasn't attacking, he was defensive. He was confused and concerned for his owner.

The man should have never been arrested in the first place. The cops got overzealous. Now we have this.

Attacking/Defensive it doesn't matter.

It was lunging at the officer in a menacing way with the clear intent to bite.

The only fault I can find with the cop that did the shooting is that he didn't finish the dog quickly and cleanly once it was mortally wounded.  He shouldn't have let it thrash about the way it did.

You have the right to your opinion, but I disagree. If this happened to one of the dog owners here commenting like it's no big deal, I have a difficult time believing that they would be very understanding of the officers.

Until the arrest, the dog showed zero signs of aggressiveness. Being that the dog was killed, obviously all the attention in this thread is going towards that. However, police in California have a clear reputation.

How was the shooting of that dog not justified?

Cause cops started it. There's like 10 people shooting video and he's the one to get arrested? Leave dude alone and everyone be happy right now. Those cops were coming pretty fast at him so he didn't have time to properly secure the dog. He also had no idea he was getting arrested. Because of these 2 asswipes a dog has died. Dogs will always defend their owners...

I think there is pretty broad support for the idea that the two cops who started this very unfortunate chain of events need to face some form of reprimand and that could even be termination.

But to let the owner of a rotty who knows he is about to get arrested and leaves his dog in a position to be free to "defend" his master off the hook with no fault here is ignoring a significant fact in this incident.  He never secured that dog and then all but walked over to the cops and held his hands out to be arrested.  Then hearing his dog becoming increasingly agitated he refused to cooperate with the (out of line) cops to the point that they began using force which only further agitates the dog.  The dogs owner bears a lot of blame in how this all ended.

There is plenty of blame to go around on this one but the cop who shot the dog doesn't deserve any of it.

I don't think he knew he was getting arrested... Everyone was shocked when they put him in handcuffs.

he did put his dog up, walk to them turn around and put his hands behind his back...i couldnt hear the officers so they could have instructed him, but he did act like he knew

So tell me this, if that guy was doing nothing different than the other 10 guys that were filming, why were the guys that were filming this particular video following his every move and filming him and nothing else?

The whole time the guys are saying how crazy it is going to get because that guy is antogonzing the cops, You can hear them say things like "preach on!", "can you hear what this guy is saying to them?" "I would hate to be that cop right now", "lol, he just yelled why are there no black cops"; "uh oh that cop keeps staring at him" ; oh sh*t they are coming to get him".

The guys was clearly not just filming like the other 10 people.

Regardless, my only point was that you said every dog owner wants justice and I was curious for what because officer #3 had every right to gun down that dog.

You know you're my boy and all, CoW, but I disagree in this case.

I completely agree that the illegal detainment is what led to the whole thing.

But, all the cop who pulled the trigger has to testify to is that he felt like he was in danger of bodily harm or worse. From that video, I would say he was justified to believe that.

It is a sad situation and a totally avoidable one, but I can't find a whole lot of fault with the guy who shot the dog.

As someone who adamantly defends second amendment rights in lieu of gun owner responsibility, I also hold dog owners to the same level of responsibility.

Yes, the dog was defending what it saw as a threat to it's owner. I don't find fault with the dog. I find fault with the dog owner and the first two cops. Primarily the first two cops.
