Can't lose Players

Recommended Posts

What team wouldn't be hurting if they lose their number 1 receiver? That doesn't mean we are totally screwed. It means other guys will have to step up bigger. Olsen would be more of a factor and guys like Hixon will get a chance to play a bigger role.I am glad Smith has been so durable which hopefully continues. If I had to choose though we could lose Smith easier than Newton or Kuechly. Smith makes 70 catches a year but Newton has the ball on every play and Kuechly had twice as many tackles as Smith had catches. He might be the second or third most important guy on offense.

Came across this recently regarding the best WR tandems in the NFL (from 6+ years ago)

Who Just Missed the List:

NFC: Panthers, Steve Smith, Dwyane Jarrett, Drew Carter. I am not yet sure that Jarrett and Carter are ready for major roles, but if they are, the Panthers WR Corps could shoot up to as high as 3 in the NFC. I also question the other two's ability to put up numbers with Jake Delhomme at Quarterback, who was horrific at times last year.

Steve Smith has spent a lot of his years here without a complete supporting cast. I'm glad he still wants to retire here but part of him must be thinking...COME ON MAN!!

I mean seriously....I can TOTALLY see this being the year that Ginn and Gettis BOTH get over 1000 yards.

Well I think there are a few things we can infer about this past draft and free agency period, or for last 2 years for that matter. Obviously Star and Short were considered bigger impact players then who was left available at WR. Secondly, the fact that we are still relying on Smith so dependently may just mean that he is still more dominant than people tend to believe.

I think this will be the last year we lean on Smith, there's still juice in the tank for him to be a #1 for this year, and Hixon and Ginn should be enough to make a formidable group with LaFell. I am confident that the offense can go. Next year however I expect a 1st or 2nd round selection at WR and then we start moving Smitty around a bit more. Which I still expect Smith to be a great player next year as well so he should have some pretty good numbers if we can get a premier talent by his side.

Outside Smitty, our wide receiver core is a joke. It always has been. I don't know what excuse Hurney had for not drafting a top level receiver. Granted, wideouts bust at a high rate in the first round but the front office has done an absolute horrid job in assembling a solid supporting cast for Smith and Newton/Delhomme. I never had faith in Carter, Jarrett, Colbert and Edwards, and LaFell has been a disappointment.

We need a double-dip WR draft this upcoming off-season.

Why do you say lafell is a disappointment? Its not like we picked him in the first or something. The only bone I have with lafell is he needs to be more consistant.

But that was 2004 and we had Moose who was still good enough to be a #1. And if I recall we don't make the playoffs that year. That was the year between the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship. Your example actually shows how when Smitty went down we were fugged (which we my point)

Why do you insist I am arguing with you?

You also forget that Smitty's injury was just one of the many we had that season and had we won the last game I believe we would have made the playoffs at 8-8 but we choked it against. N.O.

Do you realize we had nearly 4K yards passing last year?   I hope we never find out but, I still believe we will be ok.  Even if the #1 spot is done by committee.

You say we are fug'd, I say we would be in big trouble but not necessarily screwed.

So do you suggest we just throw in the towel if Smitty goes down or hope someone steps up.

Ginn is pretty much a bust at the receiver position (I am excited about him on special teams), Hixon can not stay hurt and there is a good chance that Gettis will not make the team.  I would rather rely on Lafell and Olsen any day of the week than those three.

Got you on Gettis and Hixon but Ginn I am not buying the bust label, YET.  Granted it was in short and no contact but he seems motivated to shed that label.  So I'll hold judgment on him for now.

1)  I'm not arguing - don't think you are either

2)  Yes, I hope someone steps up.  That's the keyword in your sentence.  You make it sound like "no big deal....Ginn or Gettis will just stretch the field and go off for 1K".  If Smitty goes down then we are in big, big trouble.  That's all....

I want Ginn to do well, he is very exciting to watch on special teams and with his speed he could be a huge threat at receiver if he catches on. I was not trying to hate on him at all just saying I trust olsen and lafell more. Hopefully you are right and Ginn has a breakout year!
