Charles Johnson and Luke Kuechly are extremely important to this franchise, but outside of Smith, Cam Newton has very little to throw to, which, frankly, this team should be criticized for. So Smith, even at his age (34), will be absolutely instrumental to the success of the Panthers in 2013 as well as for the continued development of Newton. Smith plays much bigger than he is and brings an attitude to Carolina’s offense. I haven’t seen any major drop-off in his play of late, but the Panthers do need to address the wide receiver position next offseason to prepare for the inevitable life without their star wideout."

You should put a hyphen between can't and lose in your title... rather confusing otherwise.  And I'm pretty sure that line about Smitty has been recycled for the past 6 years or so, but at least the team does appear to have assembled a strong core other than at the WR position in the meantime.

Smitty stretches the field.  Ginn or Gettis even if it is by committee I think we'll do ok.

 

I would imagine if he went down we would be on the wire to somebody.

 

 

Dave....you and I have been on the homer (this is you) vs realistic (this is me - or no faith as you would call it) merry-go-round a few times.  If Smitty goes down and we have to rely on Ginn (a guy who hasn't caught many passes or played very many snaps for that matter) and Gettis (a guy who hasn't played in two years and is a reach to even make this team) then yes, we are definitely in trouble.  

 

On the flip side.....I think it's interesting to see how easily you think Smitty can be replaced by one of these guys and then think the Panthers would move along like nothing happened.  No way.....

Just to Clarify..  Injury or no Injury.  Replacing Smith will be an act of God.   I am one of the few that think a couple more good seasons and he will be a shoe in for HOF.

 

You call it Homer...  I call it positive attitude......  We realistically did it when he went down with a broken leg a couple years back.

But that was 2004 and we had Moose who was still good enough to be a #1. And if I recall we don't make the playoffs that year. That was the year between the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship. Your example actually shows how when Smitty went down we were fugged (which we my point)

Ginn is pretty much a bust at the receiver position (I am excited about him on special teams), Hixon can not stay hurt and there is a good chance that Gettis will not make the team.  I would rather rely on Lafell and Olsen any day of the week than those three.

      While this is true, I'm less concerned about him playing both ways from an endurance standpoint (although it's a very legitimate issue that would hurt him on both sides of the ball, especially late in the season). The real concern about him playing both sides is the physicality of the game at this level, especially with how slim his frame is, his career wouldn't last more than 5 or 6 years, if even that long. Playing 5 years full time on both sides of the ball is literally the equivalent to playing a 10 year career. If you think a 6'1" 185 lbs player can take the pounding of a 10 year career over the course of 5 years, stay healthy doing so, and still play at a high level for a number of years after that, then I have some oceanfront property to sell you in Arizona. You can't take a player in the Top 10 of the draft (or really anywhere in the first round) if your plan is to use them in a way that will make it near impossible for them to play the length of a 2nd contract in the NFL. The only way he plays both ways in the NFL is as a CB who gets 5-7 snaps on offense a game, half of which would just have him out there as a decoy to try and take the defenses attention.
