J.R. Smith

This thread was pretty much made with the idea that we didn't get a 2 guard in the draft. After watching that NBA job interview thing on ESPN, I am convinced even more so of my preference of drafting Oladipo. I think he's going to end up like DWade in his prime.

If we don't get him or McLemore (who I don't want), then Smith is my top option in FA.

I like JR Smith and agree he would be an upgrade, but I would rather make a strong push for Monta Ellis as he is a better scorer and defender.  I know it sounds crazy, but after watching Nate Robinson this year vs The Heat, I would almost rather have him than Smith as well... probably get him cheaper too.

Neither could start with Kemba...

Nate is purely a point guard and Ellis is a combo guard.

Milwaukee is prepared to let one of Brandon Jennings or Monta Ellis walk (and let the remaining player play the point), because they can't play together and because that back court is too small.

Even our back court is small with Kemba and Henderson, but at least Henderson plays defense.

Keep in mind that this will be the second back court that Ellis has broken up (Curry and Ellis).

Also Kemba averaged a not too shabby 17.7 points per game, so I wouldn't be so sure that he would defer to Ellis.

I'm not denying Ellis' talent because he is a very good basketball player, but it's hard to see Ellis and Kemba coexisting.

I'm really intrigued by Smith because his height would actually give us pretty good size as the first three positions (Kemba, Smith, MKG).

I don't disagree with what you are saying, but I would rather have Ellis than Smith and I dont' necessarily agree that JR Smith and Kemba would have magical chemistry either.  I think Ellis is more of a complete player that would immediately be the feature player on our team whereas Smith is mainly a 3-pt threat that needs to play beside a feature player so that he is not the defensive focal point.

Smith could be had for way cheaper so taking that into consideration he may be a better fit financially, but if money didn't matter, I would take Ellis all day.

You're right neither Smith or Ellis would be guaranteed to have success with Kemba, but you also make a great point regarding each players game (though I don't believe Ellis is a more complete player by any means).

Smith is primarily a jump shooter who is great off the catch and shoot and is also good off the single dribble and shoot technique as where Ellis is primarily a driver.

If you look at the way Kemba plays, you see more of a Monta Ellis player in him then you see a J.R. Smith player in him. So it's much easier to see a Kemba/Smith back court succeeding than a Kemba/Ellis back court.

Kemba loves to attack the rim (much like Monta Ellis) and in my opinion a player like J.R. Smith makes Kemba even more dangerous because he would have a player that he could kick the ball out to after drawing pressure from Smith's defender.

On top of that, Ellis is an awful three point shooter, he hasn't shot over 28% from the three point line in the past two years. A shooting guard needs to be able to knock down a three point shot, simple as that.

Also Ellis, like Smith has never really been a true feature player as he's always had other great guards around him (Curry and Jennings).

I also don't think either is clearly a more complete player over the other. They are both very good scores, albeit; they do it in different ways. Ellis is clearly the better facilitator and Smith is clearly the better player on the board. They also both leave much to be desired on the defensive end, but at least Smith can match up better with opposing teams shooting guards due to his length.

Oh, and they are both headcases.

Smith has a chance to be a better defender then Ellis that alone makes him a more complete player.

JR Smith dominated the playoffs so I see why there are a few clamoring for him.

Wait.. I mean the opposite.

To Pay JR Smith like a franchise guy is insane..Let him go to Atl like he will.

"Dominated in the Playoffs", nope. J.R. disappeared in the Playoffs. Many believed that may hurt is market. His numbers were down from the regular season in nearly every category:

PPG RPG FG% 3PFG% FT% APG

Regular Season 18.1 5.3 .422 .356 .762 2.7

Conference Semifinals 13.5 5 .288 .230 .740 1.3

The Bucks were showing some serious interests in him and his former teammate Chris Copeland. Reports are saying they are now intending to keep Jennings, but JR could be a good replacement for Monta Ellis.

    • The reality though is that there just isn't a traditional #1 pick type of player in this draft to begin with. He might have been below Marvin last year, but I don't think he'd have been below Nabers. And if you think he disappears in some college games, then you're only looking at the box scores, I guarantee you not a single NFL GM will say he disappears in games when watching the tape. Arizona's offense is a MESS this year, the new coaching staff is beyond bad and the fanbase is screaming for them all to be fired, our OL is awful, our QB is playing like utter garbage, and we don't have another weapon to attract any defensive attention.  Teams are double and triple teaming him on almost every snap, and when combined with the OL and QB issues, it's just impossible to get him the ball sometimes.  And even when our QB forces the pass to him, half the time it's not even catchable given how poor he's been playing. And even despite all that, he's still 3rd in the nation in yards. I've also seen more WR rankings having Burden over Hunter than I have seen Hunter over T-Mac.  If we had a true outside #1 WR, then taking someone like Hunter (or Burden) instead of T-Mac would make more sense as if Hunter were to play WR in the NFL, he'd more likely be used a slot guy like Godwin or Kupp.   There's a reason most mocks/analysts who don't list Hunter as a CB/WR (or just Athlete) list him as a CB.  Because it's his better position and the side of the ball he's more likely to play in the NFL, partially due to his wire thin frame, I don't see him holding up long term as a WR.
    • This was a good breakdown from Daniels.  Last year has had a lasting impact on Young. He still isn't getting the time needed from the OL - the OL we have is made to establish the run and for the run to be in play.  We get behind and have to throw all game we are doomed with this O-line. His receivers have to catch the ball when he makes a good throw to them, he can't have them dropping his good passes. Why are we running 4 slants all toward the same direction?  Why a triple option on 4th and 1? That's on the coaches. Bryce gets hurried and starts slinging the ball where it shouldn't be thrown, more study and recognition from him are needed.  Bryce doesn't step up in the pocket and throws too soon and unbalanced.  He over and under throws the ball because of it.  That's on him.  If the pocket isn't there and he can't get his base set he needs to check down or "live to fight another day." He has been thrown to the wolves and has lost his confidence.  This team doesn't have much, if any, talent and it's a cluster.  I think he can still be an NFL QB.  Maybe not a QB1 in the short term, but if he has a chance with better coaching and personnel he may be better than we are giving him credit for. I think we ruined him last year and have not fixed anything to help him this year.  If we can't run or get way behind all NFL defenses are coming after him.  Dalton has more respect and defenses didn't always sell out to get to him because he'd hit a quick slant, screen, or check down because he has the experience to know what's coming and what to do. Just my 2 cents.
    • All depends on who the backup is. Josh Allen probably would have been benched too if there were better backups than Matt Barkley and Nate peterman.
