Captain Munnerlyn: It’s scary how good the Panthers defense can be

Recommended Posts

Most defenses don't have the front seven we are projected to have. This limits the need for an excessively good secondary. The Giants went to several playoffs and won a couple championships with secondaries much like our own. Call me a homer that's fine but I'm with munny here. Best D in football comin at ya!! It's ours for the taking. Come at me bro...

I really wish he would have kept the bit about best defense in football to himself.

Why? Does that embarrass you for some reason? If it displeases you that our team finally decides to have some balls and swag then maybe you should keep it yourself.

On paper the panthers definitely have the talent to be elite. It's probable that they go top ten. As far as making plays, creating turnovers, wreaking havoc at every level and generally being a matchup nightmare against any offense, ...well I'm more of a "believe it when I see it" type person and not so much of a "believe it until I see it not happen" type person. There's no shortage of the latter on this board.

If you look at 2007 and 2011....I bet there are at least 5-6 guys that started games in those secondaries that were drafted in rounds 1 and 2.

Now I agree the NY secondary wasn't impressive I still think it is generous to act like we mirror them.

No, it's not about being embarrassed. I like confidence, but some things are better off not said. Other teams read this stuff too. After last years Superbowl guarantee, I'm a bit soured on making public offseason declarations.

I'll voice my opinion whether you like it or not, next time just read on past my post if you don't like it.

According to Saints, and falcon fans (not that it matters what they think) Matt Ryan, and Brees are g.o.a.ts to them. so let our D sacrifice them.

I just imagined Star and Hardy running around BOA, screaming like lunatics, with Ryan and Brees' heads on a pike.

I haven't investigated Star that much yet to really know his personality, but Hardy...I can very much see Hardy doing something like that, because the guy is just strange.

Oh poo, he posts here.

I mean he's strange in a very amusing way and I'm happy to have him on the team!

When people like me come out and say this team is gonna be awesome or incredible I am usually prepared for the haters and pessimistic members.  They usually bash the positive upbeat fans as unknowledgeable or worse name calling because they believe the sky isn't falling and tomorrow is a new day.

When a player comes out and says it.  It comes from experience.  He was out there working with the coaches and players.  He is out there right in the middle of the action.  He sees the ability and chemistry forming.   When players are on the same page in May and June it helps when July and August roll around.  They aren't smacking each other on the back of the head saying "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE HERE".

I think Captain is taking what he has seen on the practice field and the influx of new talent and believes this is a scary defense.  It has all of us drooling for camp to start.  I have said this a couple times.  Rivera and McDermott have the tools to take the defense to the offense.  A good defense is when you dictate what you are going to give them.  You give a QB little time to do anything but drop back.  He has to throw short.

I keep thinking back to 2009 opening season game against Philly.  McDermott was still with the Eagles.  Jim Johnson (god rest his soul) was still in charge.  That defense was all over the place.  Scary good. Or think back to the days of Salt and Pepper.  Or our defense under Jack Del Rio.  Those were tough, take it to the offense defenses.   I truly believe this year is that year for us.  Our defense isn't trying to stop them (bend don't break) like we have in the past, we are going to make them play our game.

So when Captain Munnerlyn says we are going to be scary good.  I think he sees things coming that we haven't used in the past because we just didn't have the talent for it.  This year, we do.

I don't find it arrogant.  Confident but not arrogant.

When this teams starts thinking they arrived slow starts happen. Say this team has a lot to prove and we will do our talking on the field. That #1 defense comment is something we will here throughout the season for better or worse.

Absolutely nothing wrong with feeling that way but be a little humble and fly under the radar. This monster inc #1 defense better not be the reason we lose a game this season.
