Captain Munnerlyn: It’s scary how good the Panthers defense can be

Recommended Posts

As was pointed out in the article, they don't have to be top 5 to significantly improve and get into the playoffs.

I'm not buying the hype.  But that doesn't mean I don't like the confidence.   We added 2 rookie tackles, we get a Pro Bowl LB back that did not show much last year in the few games he played (that demonstrated he was back to Pro Bowl form) and we lost an under-rated corner.  Pressure by the front 7 could allow the secondary to "get by" but top defenses have a shut down corner.

Rooting for it to happen does not change facts.  Our defense played very well in the second half of the season but still finished #18.  Until those rookie questions are answered and until someone steps up (or gets added to roster) in the secondary the best adjective for our predicted defense would be "adequate", not "best".

Step 1 is believing. Step 2 is executing. Step 3 is making it happen. I'd rather the team keep their mouths shut and show up in week 1 ready to kick Seattle's ass. Just be the best defense in week 1 and I will be thrilled.

In all honesty it will be hard to be top 5.  With playing the Saints twice, Atlanta twice, and teams like New England who puts up tons of points it is hard not to give up that many points.  But we can win the games by outscoring them.  Look at the second Atlanta and Saints games, we gave up points late holding on to 20 point leads.  For example at the end of the third quarter against Atlanta it was 23-0.  I know we want to have a killer attitude on defense but it is also appropriate to play more prevent when you are way ahead.
