Thinking of taking up Sailing

Is taking a class recommended and any license requirements?  What would best renting or buying a boat?

I can save you a lot of time and effort on this decision. Stand the shower, turn on a fan and begin tearing up $100 bills.

Seriously, take the classes to become a captain and learn as much as you can. Always rent at first to get feel for it and decide if it was what you want to invest in. Most places will not rent you a proper sailing yacht unless you have some kind of certification. Boats are a hobby easy to get into but hard to maintain and get out of.

Yes please take classes first! Learn how to set up the sails on a 2 man dinghy. If you enjoy that both equipping and sailing then move up. My last lessons were on a J21 and I decided it just wasn't for me.

I come from a family of sailors. My cousin sailed in the America's Cup and I have done bare-boating in Tortola with my Uncle. But i have told them all, sailing for me will be a hired captain and a chef. The art of jibbing gets old after an hour for me.

Cool.

If you live near a lake or inland waterway there will be a Yacht Club. They probably do lots of social stuff and also organize education. I would check one of those. See if you can get invited to a Friday social.

Half of the benefit of sailing is sitting around and talking about sailing afterwords.
