Some could be training for competition. A close relative of mine does Iron Man competitions as well as other stuff. He does well with them. He trains on his bike in CLT actually he starts in Charlotte and ends up in another city....it's fuging crazy.

not a hater of bike riders! i have thought about getting a bike in the past. i was just saying this road i live on is a bad choice for them to be on. 2 lane road, bumper to bumper all day long. nowhere for them to go, nowhere for me to go. just very dangerous. and for the earlier post where someone mentioned people opening car doors, or throwing things at bike riders, those people should be under the jail. everyone stay safe.

In the past when this discussion came up I would jump to the defense of bike riders.  I rode all the time, and still do.  But I've given up on the roads and headed for the woods.  You get a great, stress-free work out and enjoy the great outdoors.  I used to enjoy racing cars from stoplight to stoplight but too many negatives.

1)  spandex

2)  all road bikers are colorblind &/or tasteless, not opinion- fact.

3)  extended mirrors (yes, I've been clipped)

4)  multiple "memorial rides" for killed cyclists

5)  getting lumped in with mopeds/loser scooters

6)  tarmac, reflected heat

7)  breathing car/truck exhaust

8)  too easy to stay on the seat and crank, get in the woods and stand up!  (much better core workout)

9)  distracted drivers (auto and manual)

10)  roads are getting narrower.  Debris/cracks/sewer grates can cause a spill in a split second with tiny road tires.

All that being said, the law is on the side of the cyclist.  More than one life can be ruined when a cyclist is hit.  No matter where you live I would bet that there are trails to explore somewhere nearby.  We've got two really nice one's in Wilmington where no one expects there to be "mountain" biking.
