Hornets hire Mark Price as Assistant Coach / Shooting Specialist

The Charlotte Bobcats are in the process of hiring former Georgia Tech and Cleveland Cavaliers star Mark Price as an assistant coach, in part to improve the team’s overall shooting.

Price shot 90 percent from the foul line and 40 percent from 3-point range over his 12-season NBA career. He’ll join Steve Clifford’s new staff, which also includes Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing.

Since retiring as a player, Price has worked for several NBA teams, either as a coach or consultant, to address players’ shooting – Denver, Memphis and the Golden State Warriors. He specifically worked with Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, a poor shooter coming out of Kentucky, who has since become one of the NBA’s best players.

Clifford emphasized in an interview with the Observer that while Price can help the team's shooting, that he can do a lot more. Clifford and Price previously worked together in Orlando.

"Jeff (Van Gundy) used to say Mark was Steve Nash before there was a Steve Nash,'' Clifford said of Price's point-guard abilities. "Player-development is a a piece that is critical to us, and he can help us with our shooting and our pick-and-roll. But he can also be a resource on a lot of other things.''

Rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who struggled as an outside shooter last season, specifically requested the team hire a shooting coach at the season’s conclusion. Price could also be helpful to center Bismack Biyombo, who struggles to have any shooting range.

Bobcats assistant Stephen Silas will continue on the Bobcats staff, after working under his father, Paul, and Mike Dunlap last season. The Bobcats are also in the process of hiring Bob Beyer, who worked with Clifford on Stan Van Gundy's staff in Orlando. Clifford also worked for Beyer when
Beyer was head coach at Siena.

If we were to put members of our organization (coaching staff, ownership, tv analysts) on the court against any other team's. I would like our chances lol.

For realz. Price at point, MJ and Curry on the wings, and Ewing at center. Do we have a PF anywhere?
