Before you get too depressed about the ignorance of people, keep in mind that it very much a generational thing.  Acceptance is only going to grow as more and more bigots die; young adults in Alabama are more likely to support gay marriage than old people in Massachusetts.

i'm curious as to what has led you to your belief system. did you arrive at these conclusions on your own?

Every Christian I've ever asked that has claimed that they arrived at their belief totally independently and without any influence from western society or their families beliefs. Every. Single. One.

Sig, it was a little disappointing to see you use the "if your friend jumped off a bridge would you do it too?" logic. The answer has always been how high is the bridge? How cold is the water? What type of wildlife is living below? and Why are we jumping off this bridge?

 

That is called analytical thinking. I encourage all of you to think more and talk less. More importantly treat others with respect. If you really want to pull something from the bible why not take more basic translations instead of the obscure interpretations. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you", "Turn the other cheek"(lol), and "love thy neighbor". How about "Judge not lest ye be judged" or "let he who is without sin cast the first stone".

 

I've got no problems if you want to believe homosexuality is a "sin". However we all sin. When are we going to vote in legislation to strip rights from a husband that covets his neighbor's wife? When are we going to hurl slurs and picket funerals because someone works on the Sabbath? We won't and we shouldn't. We should all adhere to a moral code that allows us to live with ourselves while obeying laws that allow us to live among others.

Since I was last here, there are too many new posts to read.  Can someone give me a summary?  How are things going?

In short, most posters have been supportive or at least not insulting with the exception of one poster who has claimed that homosexuality is "funny and disgusting." Most of the pages have been other posters arguing against said 'lone beacon of crazy' and his responses.

 

On the whole I think it's a good microcosm for what may occur in society. Namely even though the majority support one direction, an excessively vocal minority can still have their opinion display by sheer force of will. 

 

However, this is precisely why we have the first amendment. Even though those unsupportive of more rights are increasingly in the minority, just a decade ago, those fighting for more rights were the excessively vocal minority.

But, actually, yes. I would hate to be a homosexual in this world. The homosexual acceptance paradigm is not solvable, at least not in the short term. Because there are so many variables involve it's hard to set an agenda and then come up with a solution. Unlike civil liberty, where the government could play a central role in providing protection by enacting new laws, homosexual acceptance is more to do with individual ignorance. All I've been saying this whole time is because the civil liberty movement and homosexuals are asking two different thing you cannot equaate them. I'm  sure if the homosexuals were asking for equal employment opportunity, society would find ways to accommodate them.

 

Remember also, in no part of the civil rights era did the Africans demanded acceptance from white people. They demanded equal employment and the protection from the government from being killed. Blacks didn't care about the whites calling them the N word. But homosexuals' plight is for people to stop ridiculing them. No entity, government or otherwise, can guarantee you that.

 

See, that's where you're wrong (on place, at least). Homosexuals ARE discriminated against in the workplace; they DO want and need equal employment opportunity; they ARE at risk for being physically assaulted and/or killed because they are homosexual; they ARE discriminated against in cases where they want to be able to care for and be at the side of an ailing partner.

 

It's not about ridicule or even acceptance. It's about all of those things above and more.
