It didn't collapse until christianity took hold and the catholic church took control. Most of what you've heard about Rome falling apart because of hedonism is what the catholic church kept yelling as they piece by piece collapsed the empire that gays built.

Gays and Lesbians in this country are protected to the full extent of the law like everyone else. I think the movement is more about social acceptance and awareness than anything else. As far benefits for same sex unions, well that's a different topic altogether.

That book, written in 1983, was so full of logical fallacies and outright false information as to be laughable. Not to mention that lead toxicity was a fairly recognized fact in roman society as noted by various roman scholars of the time period such as Pliny the Elder and Vitruvius. Vitruvius, who flourished during Augustus' time, wrote that the Romans knew very well of the dangers.
