Really? you want to break it down to this? Fine!

But riddle me this, why do I have to know? Why does the media want me to know? Why do gay people want me to know? Heterosexuals don't announce that they are hetero's

If everyone assumed you were gay, treated you as gay, and denied you rights because they thought you were gay.... how quiet would you be?

Being homosexual is not solely about being sexually attracted or involved with a person of the same sex any more than being heterosexual is solely about being sexually attracted or involved with a person of the opposite sex.

Can both be only about the sex? Absolutely. But, in general terms, both are more than just sexual feelings and actions (even though "sexual" is in both words). They are about attraction, both sexual and otherwise, and they are about feelings of caring, love, devotion and more.

A relative once said to me that he was OK with homosexuals as long as they don't "flaunt" it in his face, and by that he meant anything as innocent as holding hands in public. I countered that he didn't think twice about holding his wife's hand in public, thus "flaunting" his heterosexualness for all to see.

My most favorite cousin is a gay man who I love deeply and feel for every day as he expresses how people often treat him because he's gay. That doesn't keep him from being who he is - a caring, extremely intelligent, talented (beautiful singer) who brightens the world for many people.

Heterosexuals announce it every single day -- holding hands, kissing, and more in public.

Surely you can't be this stupid.

Let me break this down for you and any of the other like minded/weak minded individuals in this thread.

Being openly gay doesn't mean that they are announcing their fuging presence. It's not like they are going to introduce themselves like "Hey, my names Rob and I really love to take it in the ass from other men!! What's your name?"

Being openly gay is about NOT HAVING TO HIDE the fact that you're gay. It's about being able to answer the question "Are you a homosexual?" truthfully with a "Yes" without fearing backlash and reprisals. It's about being able to openly kiss, hold-hands, share a seat, look affectionately at, say "I love you", to your significant other, WITHOUT fear. It's about being able to live your life the way you want to fuging live it, without worrying about whether someone might figure out who you love and the problems that such knowledge might present.

You don't have to announce that you're straight, just like a gay person doesn't have to announce that they're gay. But riddle me this, how do you answer the question "Are you straight?" Do you say yes, without question.....or do you hesitate and say "NO no....I'm gay. I'm gay, man! Why would you think that I"m straight?!?!?!", because you fear the consequences....

That's the difference.

Oh I get it, its not the tax break or the marriage that you care about...........its changing the way people think! Yeah, fat chance on that happening. Racism is still alive and well! And people can't help the color of their skin!

You're god damned right it is. Because as long as we proclaim to be the land of the free, then the goal should be to live in a country where no one is ashamed to be who they are.

Got a problem with that?

Clearly you cannot be as stupid to think this is on a level with Civil Rights crusade of the 1960's. Jackie Robinson=pioneer.

Out of work gay dude from NBA=cry for media limelight

Because they don't have to. You don't "come out" as straight to your parents, and people don't treat you differently for being straight. It's the societal norm for most people to just be assumed to be straight, and considering the majority of gays can't be differentiated from straights outside of their orientation, many of them are simply presumed to be straight unless they "come out".  Imagine that you're gay, but your friends nor family know; you're constantly barraged with questions of when you'll find a nice girl to settle down with, of which actresses you think are hot, if you like any girl at school/work do you like. Eventually, you still haven't had a girlfriend - your big brother maybe jokes with you, "what are you, gay or something?", your father chimes in "haha, not my son." They say it in passing jest, but it hurts you, because that's what you are, it's part of you, and they don't know it, and that essentially builds up like a soda shook up in a can, until they come out. Some people do, some don't. Can you blame someone for not wanting to essentially live a double life?

For example, I'm an atheist - if my parents constantly forced me into church, bible school, and asked for me to pray with them, I'd at some point tell them, or as you put it, "announce" that I was an atheist. If they never forced me into church or religion, and it never was brought up, I wouldn't feel the need to tell them unless they asked.

You saying "announcing" makes it seem like they're comparable to that friend that constantly likes to remind everyone how nice of a car they drive, or how prestigious of a school they go/went to, when they're not comparable at all. Not in the slightest.

If gays were given the same rights as straights, and more parents taught their children that no matter who you love, everyone's the same, then there would be much less of a societal stigma against gays, thus much less incentive for them to "box it in."

Athletes and famous figures "announcing" that they're gay wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal in a society that is rid of sexual orientation stigmas, and this whole idea of "announcing" wouldn't even really exist, really. It'd be much more of a seamless coexistence of the two orientations.

Take your slippery slope idiot fallacy back to the phone-in line for Rush Limbaugh. That logic is moronic and fallacious.

Cause kids and animals can properly consent the same way that two adults can?

Christ you're a f*cking idiot.
