Just a question.  How much are the scholarships for?  1 year, 4 years, 500 dollars or 50,000  Just asking because scholarships can be for a little or a lot.

Yeah I know it is looking a gift horse in the mouth but it does make a huge difference.

Either way CJ is doing what very few professional athletes or rich people for that matter do, he is making a difference in people's lives.

That is the hope.  Some people give for the publicity it  generates others do it out of desire to help others.  If he was only doing it to help, then why not do it anonymously??

To encourage his peers to do likewise?

Then agree to match any scholarships any other players on the team want to make.  I don't begrudge folks liking the attention that giving brings them but I rarely see athletes give gifts anonymously.  They like the publicity and attention it brings.  It is like actors or singers doing benefits. They are out there encouraging people to donate money and of course it is their time and effort to get there and do them but most of them don't give their own money.  If they feel that strongly about something, do the benefit and donate $100,000 out of their own pocket.  For many of them that is equivalent to you or I giving $250.

Just a pet peeve of mine.

You can't discredit these actions because they have a name attached to them. CJ making a donation visibly may promote a culture among athlete where giving is done more regularly. Where it becomes almost an expectation, an aspiration, a goal, and something to be proud of amongst the young millionaires.

And celebrities doing benefits, would you ever, EVER watch or attend a benefit if the only speaker was the 67 year old board chairman? Celebrities who do those kinds of events, even if they don't write a check (many of them do) they are making a donation. They are donating their time, and when you are a celebrity, that is a commodity. Your ability to be in a place at a point in time is the service you offer. Them agreeing to perform or appear for free is a donation. It saves the organization thousands of marketing dollars in having to hire an act, and generates more interest for their benefit.

I get your point, though. You think they should give selflessly. But it's the Phoebe thing (and I never quote "Friends," but this is a rare case where it's applicable); there are no selfless good deeds. Yeah, maybe that bolster's their public image, but at the end of the day, these kids can go to college, cancer research can continue, and wounded warriors can find work. I don't give a fug if they got some public good will out of it.

And I guarantee you, a lot of companies are donating money because of how public Bill Gates is with donations, and their keeping up with the Jones is going to pay for better treatments for Leukemia.
