Cam wants a run game

Cam will run less than 125 times this year. Who knows how many yards that will entail. It simply means that him running won't be a big part of the offense like under Chud.

As for Rivera, he has said that he and Gettleman are on the same page which means to anyone with a modicum of understanding that either Rivera and he were already on the same page or Gettleman has told Rivera what he wants to have happen and Rivera is going to do it. Gettleman surely sounds like someone who knows what he wants and it going to get it. He also has said he has faith in Rivera. And I am sure that the coaches will call the plays that isn't even up for debate. I am also sure that if Gettleman says he doesn't want Newton hurt running the ball and wants a traditional offense, that will directly impact the playcalling. They will do what he wants them to do. You don't have to call every play to influence the playcalling. To assume that Gettleman won't analyze every play and offer his advice on what to do more of and what to stop doing is naive. He is a football guy who watches film constantly. He is going to be involved in every aspect of the team including gameplanning and evaluation of each player.

Cam ran 126 and 127 times.

So you claim he will run less than 125 times?

So he runs 124 times and you then get on your soapbox claiming you where right....Dave Gettlemen called it and Cam ran signifantly less.

If you are going to claim Cam runs significantly less....why not pick a numbers that isn't almosy the exact same number as he standard rush attempts to use.

Gettlemen can want a lot of things....but he inherited Rivera and Newton. Don't forget that. They aren't Gettlemen guys in reality....JR boys.

lol....

It was a wrinkle in 28 of 32 games.

What exactly can't I understand. 28 of 32 defines the read option in Carolina.....not the 4 games that started the 2012 season.

And where are you getting the number 28 of 32? We didn't see the read option until the final part of Cam's first year, so it has not been 28 out of 32.

I doubt anyone will complain if we use it 3 or 4 times a game like we did at the very end of last year, and I believe that is what the coaches are talking about.

There will probably be less designed runs for Cam, but plays break Down AND Cam will have more room to audible.

And for Christs sake can we get some bootlegs this year. Its perfect to take advantage of Cams abilities.

Agree 100%.

I would LOVE to see Cam rolling out....dragging the TE across the middle.....WR on a sideline go pattern....with Cam having the option to run or pass.

Would definitely cause defenses major problems.

That's been my thinking. I've bitched about this for a while now. I think I could count on one hand the amount of bootlegs we've ran.

From Panthers.com: "Rivera likes up-tempo practice, LB's progress"

FUTURE OF ZONE READ: The zone-read element of the Panthers' offense has been featured occasionally during OTAs, and Rivera said it will remain a part of the offense in 2013.

"If you go back and look at what we did in the second half, that's what I envision," Rivera explained. "I envision (the zone read) being used in certain situations and circumstances. There are some things we can exploit against some opponents because of it.

"We'll use it and we'll use it very smartly. We're going to mix it up and we're not going to go with something like that as a staple."

The Panthers do, however, plan on making consistent production from the running backs a staple of the 2013 offense.

"To keep them involved (is a goal)," Rivera said. "With (Cam's) ability to get ball downfield, it's going to open things up underneath. With his ability to run, it's going to make people hesitate, and that's where you see the effectiveness of the running backs."

They're other quotes elsewhere (from Rivera, Shula or the players), as well

Rivera saying "we're not going to go with something like that as a staple", implies (especially from what we know) it was over used last season, which it was at many points.

When has newton been hurt running the ball ......never but i know plenty of time where he wast hurt or limping when he was standing in the pocket............You can watch all the films you want to but if you have no experience in coaching   or played football i think your opinion  is going to be less influential .........There should be only one voice and one influence in coaching and that is the coaches......Gettleman is a great GM and so far he has done a great job but Panther nation are making him a King  who has "single handedly" improved the team .....The only real Influence is going to be coming from Richardson..... when they say they are on the same page they could mean that  Gettleman knows what Rivera's plan are for the team as coach and Gettleman  overall plan for the team................

The majority of the team's success is going to be decided by the players and the coaches.

Fine.  Cam will run less than 100 times this year.  Of those less than 40 will be designed.

So let me get this straight, an owner who just less than a week ago Gettleman said was not that involved in day to day activities because he had outside interests (as opposed to the Giants whose owners are there every day) is going to have more influence than the GM who is there every day, has been involved in multiple organizations for the past 25 years, and is reportedly involved in every aspect of the game like attending every practice.

Seriously????  Just because he doesn't agree with you doesn't mean he won't or shouldn't be involved.  You do know what a grinder is right??  A guy who gets ahead by working hard, putting in the hours paying attention to all the details, etc.  Hint: Grinder are folks who are involved and managing every aspect.  Gettleman has been called a Grinder by virtually everyone.

Also I believe Rivera said the option would be used "smarter". He didn't really say we'd use it less OR more.

Smarter implies we didn't use it smartly last year.  It also implies we used it indiscriminately instead of judiciously.  In plain english that means we will use it less.

Find me any post where a coach of our football teams backs anything you said in that post.

1. No coach has said Newton won't run much

2. No coach has said when Cam will run or how the read option will be ran going forward

Again, you are doing what you are bashing others about...

Read option was the focus of our O for 4 games out of 32. Those 4 games don't define it, the other 28 do....and it was a wrinkle in those other 28. It will remain in the O just like it was in the 28....an option/wrinkle as both coach and GM have stated.

I said Gettleman said Cam will run less.  Rivera said that he and Gettleman are on the same page.  hence most reasonable people will make the assumption that therefore Rivera will run Cam less.  I am simply reading what they said and implying what would be a natural connection.  You on the other hand are singlehandedly arguing against something that frankly is well understood by everyone else here. Believe what you want and I won't try to influence you given that even if I could show you 10 articles where he said we will run Cam less you would still argue with it.  I tend to spend my time on activities with some likelihood of changing opinions. I have yet to see where you have ever admitted you were wrong about anything.

The read option was used quite a lot in more than 4 games. What is a focus for you?  The number of times we run it or what?  Is a focus 10 times, 5 times, 15 or what??? It is easy to defend yourself  and then backpedal when you use vague terms like a focus??

And Cam virtually ran the exact same number of times in 11 and 12.

Point is Cam runs under Rivera....how he runs doesn't matter. Running the read option smarter doesn't mean Cam's game suddenly will be that of Eli. Only a poo coach/franchise would make the biggest mismatch in NFL history largely one dimensional at this stage of his career
