I got a ticket in mecklenburg going 18 over (stupid 35 mph speed limit on Park Rd). Went to a mechanic shop I knew, had them fill out paperwork saying they tested my speedometer and it was off and that I paid to have it fixed.

Took this to court and they switched it to malfunctioning equipment (or some similar term I forget), non-moving violation, no points on my license, insurance never went up. Paid about $250 and was done. Didn't have to hire a lawyer or go to trial.

You can only get the speed reduced. Either way you are getting points on your insurance.

Last one I got three years ago the cop had no radar and said I was doing 60+ in a 35. Which I wasn't. He wrote it for 50 in a 35. I went to the courthouse myself and spoke to the assistant DA and got it reduced to 40 in a 35.

I don't think you've seen what a true racket is until you experience it here lol.

That is absolutely and categorically INCORRECT.

I have received two tickets in the past 3 years that were reduced to improper equipment.....and know many people who have gotten the same.

One was in Rockingham and one was in Charlotte....I was clocked for doing over 15 mph over the speed limit both times.

The improper equipment charge actually carries a higher fine that the speeding....thus they are eager to plead it to that.

I have known others who have gotten it reduced as well by going to court.  I chose to pay a lawyer the $75-100 and let him deal with it.

I never even met the attorney...did everything over the phone and sent him a check for the total.  I did not have any documentation that there was malfunctioning equipment.  It absolutely is a racket....but I will gladly pay the $325 total amount (fine and fee) and not deal with insurance.

Not familiar with Rockingham. Maybe it has changed. I'm only going by what I've been told in the past by numerous attorneys. I had a ticket in Union county and had it dropped to improper equipment. Never here though.

Reading up it on now it appears as though you can. However, you cannot have a speeding ticket in the last 3 years or exceed the speed limit by more than 18 mph. It sounds like that prayer for judgement crap I got before.

Regardless, they only want your money.

The ticket in Mecklenburg county was about 4 years ago.  Was doing 82 in a 55 on I-77 (right at Arrowood).  Paid an attorney $100 plus the fine....never heard from them again.  Never got points on my license.

It is definitely a racket.
