My son wants to be Indiana Jones. a professor and archeologist. Hes really enjoying this thread. Its been a realistic educational tool so thanks :)

awesome! i'll be headed out to the field in a few days to do some actual excavation so i'll post more information at that point... it's a bit more hands-on and particular to archaeological work than the lab analysis i'm doing most of the time (which is the boring part of archaeology, actually.)

1) always. the temperature is pretty mild here but the sun is really intense and sucks the moisture right out of you. i drink steadily and my piss still stays bronze

2) are you based in greensboro?

3) haha thanks for the offer, but sour cream can't be shipped by air freight unless you package it with a powered refrigerator, and that's the only thing i'm craving (and in two weeks from today we're packing up and shipping off to uruguay for a bit of vacay time, so the desert's clutches on me are limited.)

4) loading another one after this post.

we're actually being worked harder than most groups that come through -- six days a week, 9am to 6pm (with an hour for lunch.) i have actually worked through every sunday since arriving, so i haven't had a day off the job in a month, but i enjoy what i'm doing so it's no big deal. usually friday and saturday nights we all meet up and hit a local bar called banditos that easily makes the top three of coolest bars i've ever been to in my life. the guy who owns it paints during the day and hangs his art up in the bar, so it's covered from wall to wall to ceiling to floor to tables to stools in original artwork... incredible place. i'm going to try to buy one of his particularly striking impressionist paintings this weekend if he'll part with it for a decent price

spent today in the desert again, mapping archaeological features on the site we've been working on... we finally completed it, marking everything ad nauseum with a differential GPS. it's been fun working out there but the harsh wind and scathing sun and the constant breathing of dust will be nice to avoid from now on.

the only place out there that provides any shade at all is the occasional bone jutting out of the ground. pictured here is the proximal end of a human femur, and as it's presently undated, it could range from 1000 BCE to as late as 1400 CE. that's either a rib or an ulna jutting up in the background.
