Cam Newton signing event at Belk (ATL) today

If ya'll aren't on Facebook, this got tossed around and shared via the Panthers and Cam's facebook page (talking about the one he did in Charlotte I guess last week at SP) and some of the comments people left on it were just straight up venomous..not just your typical "S cam Newton" or "focus on the field" sh*t.

There were people taking shots at his intelligence, calling him a f a g, and saying to protect your wallets because he'd steal them like he did laptops. And the majority of the people were from Charlotte.

All because the guy wanted to promote his clothing line and take pictures with some fans.

Makes me absolutely disgusted at some of the yankee MFers that live in and daily ruin this city.

Can u elaborate more, how long did he stay, was he only signing made headshots

Sorry if I'm answering this too late for it to help, but Saturday afternoon of last week, Cam was at Belk at South Park Mall in Charlotte. He was supposed to be there from about 2-4, but he was only there until about 3:15. He had to leave for some other scheduled thing. I remember the 3:15 part because if he hadn't had to leave early, my brother and I definitely would have gotten to "meet" him (we met at the mall and waited in line for 20-25 minutes before Cam left). But he was only signing the headshots that you mentioned, only one per fan, and other than that all that happened was that people got to take pictures of him. He did not sign merchandise. For the last few minutes he was there, they let people basically get pictures of him any way they could, as long as they stayed behind the velvet rope thing, like they do at movie premieres. It was pretty cool just because my bro and I got within probably 10 feet of Cam. My brother got the best shot of Cam looking right into his iPhone camera. I think I could share it if you guys wanted.

Aside from the stuff about the picture my brother got, is this similar to your experience?

It's always about hot-lanta with him, so should we be worried that he will defect to the dirtybirds when his contract runs out? If so, let's second mortgage the team to sign JOHNNY FOOTBALL next draft!

It was lame as hell.

I stayed there for 2 hours and didn't get an autograph.

He showed up :45 mins late, then when he got their, he went upstairs to do an interview. Then he left before the people who had been waiting all freaking day got to see him.

....TBH, if he wasn't the Panthers QB, I would be bashing him pretty badly in this thread after the way that was handled....if people come to see you, and you A) show up late B.) leave without getting to see all (or a big majority) of the fans who took time out of their Saturday in the summer to see you. It was pretty incosiderate. This is the only place I have to vent...sorry.

I get it man. I don't know when Cam really did show up to the event at the Charlotte Belk. I didn't even know the event was happening until about noon on the day of. My mom knew about it, having been in the mall earlier in the day, and she told my brother, who in turn told me. I didn't even leave my apartment in the University area until about 2:00; got there at about 2:30. He was there when I got there, but my brother had the idea he didn't get there until after 2.

I was kind of miffed as well when he left 45 minutes before the event was advertised to end. However, considering I hadn't even known about the event until 2 hours beforehand, and I had several things to do before making the 30-minute trip to the mall, I didn't feel I had the right to complain. I hadn't gotten there at 11:00 AM like a lot of other folks who did see Cam got there.

I also think this may have been a case of Cam's agent overbooking him for stuff. I'd like to think that if Cam could have stayed longer, he would have. I kind of made myself feel better with my brother's suggestion that we go to training camp this year, and we could get a lot more personal interaction with players there. I think we may do that. We wanted to last year, but I'd just gotten back from a really intense two months of summer school at college trying to get ahead, and I just wanted to relax instead of making the preparation and drive down to Spartanburg.

Yeah Cam can be pretty lame to fans when the cameras are off. I can live with that if he plays well and treats his teammates well.

Yeah I keep hearing stories that he blows people off for autographs and isn't overly friendly outside of non sanctioned events.

The flip side of that is the fact that his status as a pro athlete doesn't mean he owes anyone autographs or impromptu photo ops.

Also heard that he's more of an introvert than he leads on and that can be mistaken for being an asshole.

For events like these obviously Cam isn't handling all the logistics. With any kind of celebrity or athlete you run the risk of missing out on their autograph. Personally I wouldn't try getting it this way regardless, but that's just me.

Then you get the grown men out there who may randomly see him somewhere and expect one.

Frankly I don't understand the obsession with autographs. I'd rather just get a picture with them if anything.
