The thing about corner is this, what is he doing that safety isnt doing also? True that the corner has to do that every down while the safety might have more of a drop down role where he becomes an extra linebacker, but safeties have to be able to cover man to man also. Just because he doesnt do it as often doesnt make his job any less difficult when the very next play he might be blitzing the qb.

I can remember this story about Darren Woodson being lined up 3 feet in front of Moss. Moss just looking at him like he's gonna drop him off at the 20 and go for brunch in the endzone by himself. Safeties have to cover receivers too.

The safety is sometimes taking on the role as the corner and sometimes as a linebacker. He's constantly interchanging positions from play to play. .  and that, to me, requires more athleticism than the other two.

I think the most honest way to determine the best athlete on the field is to introduce race as determining factor. Yes, race. Not racism, people. The position that is strictly dominated by one race because of it's strict physical demand will tell you where the best athletes are.

The positions that are physically demanding and strictly dominated for the most part by one ethnic group are(in order):

CB -> RB -> WR.

WRs. lately we've seen some good #2 WRs with some multi-ethnic representations. But, unless by default, all the #1s have been one ethnic group dominated.

RBs. We've seen some rare sightings of multi-ethnic representation coming of the bench. But, unless default, all the starting RBs have been of one ethnic group.

CB. I would say, that's the only position that is strictly dominated by one racial group because of its strict demand of speed and the utilization of that speed.

So, CBs are the best athletes on the field.

Can't wait to read your thread titles.

LoL we can take bets on if he gets to 150 posts.

Youve got to be very careful to bring up race here, HW. About the only thing I can side with anyone on that subject is that different races have different physiologies. Mental capabilities, in my experience, are completely random. I think thats what youre saying so I wont go into that any further.

Also, just because less body types fit a skill doesnt make the position more difficult, it makes it a better fit for that body type. Is the action or job more difficult for that specific body type? No, it just cant be done by as many types of people. Its something to consider but not something to use as a base because there is always a finite number of them in the league. If thats the case, there is always an elite group whether it is purely of one ethnic group or not.

The question Im asking is. . .which actions (from play to play) are the most difficult to preform from a total position assignment perspective?

If the safety has to be able to cover man to man like a corner then the safety already has 90% of the corner's job in his job description also. Factor that he also has to be able to tackle and blitz like a LB. . .and that puts him over the top of both.

Safety? Too small to be a true warrior. LBs are the ones you want to take to battle with you. They may not possess the speed of those puny DBs, but their size to strength to speed ratio is off the chartz.

LBs be the baddest men. You go tell them they are the most athletic.

By the way. I pretty much agree with you. Safeties are pretty athletic. I just couldn't in all good conscience let it slide. Had to give my LB spiel one more time.

Im giving a firm nod to the size to strength rational though, Hubs, its solid stuff. . . . and no I like my life just fine, Im not going to tell any LB that he's not the best athlete on the field. I like not breathing through hoses.

Surely the LB is among the best.

You're the only one to bring up what being an athlete really means - a warrior.  If you break it down the best athlete would be the one that makes the best warrior, for any time period and with any technology(excluding very modern stuff).  Sports is nothing but war porn anyway.  The perfect combination of size, strength, speed, stamina, aggression and instincts - the clear choice is linebacker.
