Smitty OTA Observation 6/5/13

lol I was just writing this exact article before I came on here. I definitely like that both Smitty yesterday and Gross/Piggy on That's Gross talked about the leap that Amini has taken in the offseason. I also like the continued praise of Josh Thomas. If he becomes a solid #1 CB, then we should be less worried going into the season. Plus, Robert Lester was the first person that came to mind when asked who has impressed him, so there't that.

I like what i hear from smitty... however, I dont know if i like the direct verbiage and the run-heavy 1st down simulation. I know its only OTAs but i think DC's could have a field day if we call the same plays at the same situation [a la foxball]. although we have better athletes and a better QB then we did back then, so who knows.

At first blush it seems like that may be a problem but try to remember we have a rushing offense like no other.  We can run from any set, add to that if we do commit and have success with running the ball, we all remember how beautiful play action looked in '03 and '08.  We could be deadly this year. (crosses fingers)

I don't think that means Shula will only run on first down. I think it's more of an indication of the value Shula places on running the ball with running backs. The first plays they perfect are running plays. But ball placement and situation will determine play calls.

Yea there are no conclusions that  can be drawn from an observation made this early.

Why don't you like the verbiage? It's not like he's saying easy verbiage is equivalent to simple and predictable routes/plays. He's saying the play that is called will be easily understood for all 11 players in the huddle.

Smitty: "Chud's calls were too long, and players were getting lost in the verbiage because it was too long."

Man I agree. NFL players are not supposed to be rocket scientists. It's a kids game played by adults. Most of these guys wouldn't exactly consider themselves gifted academia. So why confuse them with play calling. Not an indictment on the intelligence of football players, as most are likely a lot smarter than I am. Just saying, there's enough to worry about trying to beat the incredible athletes you're lined up against. Probably that much harder when you're not sure what the heck you should be doing.
