I watched a documentary on them a while back.  They said that the band was named for a car.  It was a 1938 Ford or Chevy....can't remember which.

well then they are telling multiple stories because in an interview the story was they were locked out of there practice location and used a 38 to shoot the lock off the door and gave them the inspiration.
