Was scratching my head when the OP said CCR.

 

They are a fantastic band and one of my favorites....but they are NOT southern rock.

 

Allman Brothers has to be considered the best.

I said back when this thread was new that Skynyrd are among the top but Id easily place them as low as 5 and no higher than third.

There are three bands I think of when I hear the term southern rock:

 

Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, and Marshall Tucker Band

 

Canned Heat and Molly Hatchet don't get enough praise IMO.

 

But my personal fave--Atlanta Rhythm Section.  Champagne Jam on Vinyl is fantastic.

For me it's between Skynyrd and ABB. Skynyrd gives it the face for Southern Rock with probably one of the most overplayed songs in Sweet Home Alabama. ABB gives it that sweet music that speaks to the soul. I'd be comfortable calling it a tie between the two.
