If that is what you base Southern Rock on....then you truly do not know anything about the genre.

 

Just because they were from a southern state, it does not make them Southern Rock.

 

I love TP...great music and fantastic songwriter.  But, Southern Rock is a specific genre.

Tom Petty is a bit of a grey area. His music has a lot in common with the bluesy music of pure southern rock bands like 38 special. Some of his music is southern rock while some is just pop. 

 

Much of .38 special music is just pop too but they are always on the southern rock list.
