Best Southern Rock Band Of All Time Is...

Happy Panther

Just because a band formed in the South and plays a "version" of rock, does not necessarily classify them as Southern Rock.

R.E.M. anyone?

many other examples in this thread.

Anybodyhome seems to understand because he lived through it, like me. Rest of you young monkeys azzes are going to have to brush up on your Southern Rock

R.E.M is southern rock? Really dude???

Next thing you're gonna be telling us is that Squirrel Nut Zippers is "Southern Rock" just because they are from Chapel Hill!

Maybe I misunderstood your post, but "Southern Rock" is a "version" of rock/country, which classifies them as Southern Rock. Not just because the band itself is from the south.

I think he was pointing out the same thing you brought up- REM is from the South, that doesn't necessarily mean they play Southern rock.

There was a genre called the "California sound" that caught on in the mid-late sixties. Bands such as Jefferson Airplane (before they went electric), Mama & Papas, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, etc. who all played an acoustic sound almost like folk music. Bands like the Eagles, Grateful Dead, Creedence grew out of this sound as the electric version, The Band was kind of a hybrid version of this.

While the sound is very similar to Southern rock, I think it would be a mistake to categorize the Eagles or Creedence as Southern rock. However, one cannot look past the geographic origins of a band as an influence on the genre of music they play. Put a bunch of musicians together from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama and you'll likely hear a lot of Southern rock influence.

I think CCR counts as southern rock although they are diverse. I think Skynard would have listed CCR as a major influence (so says wiki).

It's semantics but CCR is often listed as a top Southern Rock band.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Molly Hatchet, they're about as southern rock as you can get! Maybe not "the greatest" but they are one of the best! God damn if they don't jam!!!

Everytime I see something about Molly Hacthet I think of this conversation from that awful Adam Sandler comedy CD from the 90's.

Buffoon: "I know a guy who can suck his own dick."

M2: "Yeah, I know a guy who can do that too. He's the drummer from Molly Hatchet and one night we had two cases of Southern Comfort, man. We were so wasted off it. I'm serious man."
