Article from the 2012 season: Delhomme talks about pressure on Cam

saw this article posted on a facebook panthers group and decided to post it. it most likely came up in this forum when it first came out, but i enjoyed re-reading it. delhomme talks about the pressure he faced following the superbowl season when he felt like he was putting all the work in and doing everything right but kept losing games anway.

They’ve sort of hung the moon on Cam in Charlotte,” Delhomme said, via Steve Reed of the Associated Press. “The expectations on him to lead this franchise are incredible. We have to remember he’s 23 years old. He’s still a kid.”

Truth be told, Newton’s numbers aren’t that different after five games this year as last. But the Panthers are 1-4, he’s coming off his worst game as a pro, and a bye week is keeping him from changing the narrative in a town that’s down.

Delhomme said Newton has to keep it from being all about himself, having gone through a similar downturn in 2004. The Panthers followed their Super Bowl berth with a 1-7 start which included losing Steve Smith to a broken ankle in the opener, and Delhomme felt the pressure.

“I’m thinking, man what am I doing wrong?” Delhomme said. “You find yourself preparing as hard you can, watching as much film as you can and then you’re like, ‘Why isn’t coming through during the game?’ It just eats you up. It tears you apart. But finally I realized I was trying to do too much. You have to trust what you do and not try to do too much.

all in all a good read. it reminds me of how much i admire delhomme and what he did for this franchise for those couple of years. i hope cam can do this same.

We all loved him while he was "Good Jake". "Bad Jake" leaves a bad taste is people's minds.

We had pretty much 5 good years with "Good Jake". That was a pretty good run. It really is hard not to think about Jake and not smile. At least for me. Cardiac Cat was a hoot.

I still remember the Bears game in 08 when Briggs or somebody hit jake late after a scramble, and he got up screaming and swearing at the Bears defense and beating his chest. Can you imagine the reaction if Cam did that? "entitled to not getting hit," "that's what happens to running QBs," "mature QBs don't have little tantrums, they get up and play football" etc.

"Immediate ejection and suspension. That'll teach him"

Anyone who still harbors bitterness towards Jake needs to check their fan status; that man gave this franchise his all. Whatever money he was paid was not a mistake of his own doing, so he shouldn't get the Hurney stinkeye, and before his arm injury he played some damn fine ball.

Jake was the typical Gunslinger.  Man when he made it happen the fans were GOD HE IS GREAT but when he failed he was the biggest POS this franchise has ever seen.

Smitty made him good,  his tenacity made him a Legend in Carolina.

That overwhelming desire to win is not with every player in this league.  Jake was a different man on the other side of the lines.

I remember that Bears game.
