Sports Media 101 (panthers101.com) fuels the great Smitty-HOF question.

if he does that.....by the time he is HOF eligible....all he will have his yards and he won't be top 10 at that point.    If you look at just numbers only....Santana Moss' numbers will be just as good overall.

He needs a ring and to improve his postseason resume (which was off to a record start) IMO.

That's if you think Santana Moss can catch him. He's almost 2,000 yards behind Smitty and he only put up 500 yds last year, he doesn't start anymore either.

I was low balling Smith's numbers. If Smith could hit 14,000 I think that it would be pretty incredible yet still doable for him. Smith will never have impressive TD totals, but if he could get into the 70 TD range it would help his case. We also need to get to the damn superbowl.

Such a shame that a good portion of his career will have been wasted with the likes of Clausen, Testeverde, St. Pierre, and Matt Moore QB'ing.

Not to mention the operning monday night game injury against the packers in 04 that cost him a season and Jake Delhomme forgetting how to throw to his own team after 08.

He stated he wants to play up to his16th season, that would mean he has another 4 years left in him.

Let's assume on the low end, he averages 900 yards for the next 4 years, that would place him at 15,052 yards, good for 5th all time.

I like his chances.

I has a long stat filled well thought out rebuttal to this post but it wouldn't matter and I think this is more fitting anyway.

I remember hearing or reading once from someone I believe is a HOF voter and one of the single biggest criteria that they look for in HOF eligibility was the following:

Were you (one of) the most dominant players at your position for a sustained amount of time during the era in which you played?

Smitty fits this to a T. Ask any CB's, both dominant pro bowlers or scrubs, who the toughest guy they've ever had to cover is, and I promise you an overwhelming percentage will say Steve Smith. He did it it in the regular season, the playoffs, the Superbowl. Every stage he has been on in the NFL he has dominated. Remember the triple crown or the 05 NFC Championship game run we were on where he absolutely dominated Chicago and NYG? It wasn't until Seattle put a literal quadruple team on him that we lost. And even then, 5th string RB's didn't help. The first time the man touched a football in the NFL, he took it to the house for a touchdown for gods sake. I hope in four years when he hangs it up, the last play he makes is a Super Bowl winning TD catch.

Smitty HOF 2022.

are you by chance the one that has been posting about all the dreams? well, dream on. the the only way steve smith gets in the hall of fame is if he buys a ticket and takes a tour like the rest of us.

I have always said Smith is HOF talent....easy.

I just think without him making his mark more in the postseason. His regular season numbers won't be enough to get in.....too many WRs will be there....and it is though for WRs pre passing era to get in with numbers

I don't know anything about any dreams, but are you telling me if Smitty gets into the top maybe 7ish all-time receiving yards and gets a Super Bowl ring, he still has no chance at the HOF? Are you smoking rocks?

Edit: I just looked for sh!ts and giggles and if Steve Smith averages about 850 yards, 65 catches and 5 touchdowns for the next four years, he'll be top 5, top 15, and top 20 ALL-TIME in each of those respective categories. That, mixed with playoff success, era dominance, and longevity will get him in IMO.

No. He is an Indy, Luck nuthugger. Trying to ignore him, but he is just too entertaining.

first of all, I wouldn't get my hopes up regarding the ring. also, there are a lot of wide outs with lofty stats, and longevity that aren't in the hall. wr is one of the toughest positions to get into the hall. it took chris carter a long time after he was eligible, and I think he's about top 3 or so in the major catagories. reggie wayne will make it before smith. consummate pro, great numbers, a ring, and never assaulted any of his teammates. but keep dreamin, it will give you something to look forward to.

Those numbers only hold true if the players ahead of him have huge drop offs or retire. For example, those TDs numbers would leave Smith at 83 which would be exactly 20th. Antonio gates gets 1 TD and Smith is 21th, Reggie Wayne and Fits each get 7 and Smith is 23th. He will still finish with great numbers but some of those down years like 2010 will hold him back.
