Smitty wants to be around a few more years

Don't know how I feel about this. It's great that he wants to keep playing, but I hope this doesn't have any effect on our search for a new #1 WR. We need a new #1 bad, as Smith has clearly lost a step, and from here on out it'll probably get worse. I just hope management doesn't go into it thinking, "great, Smith has decided to stay on a little longer, so we have a little longer to fix the receiver position."

I can't imagine us skipping on top WR talent in the draft next year. The only way we don't is if some how LaFell takes a big leap or Gettis has arrived.

I seriously doubt that's even close to Gettleman's thought process...

Coach Rivera noted during recent OTS's that Smitty was "running like a 25 yr old" so, it looks realistic for him to play well for the near future.

Gotta love those folks discounting Smitty. Wonder how many of those folks thinking Smitty has lost a step even know he played on a bad knee most of last year?

He is back healthy this year. And Rivera has already had to hold him out of a few practices to protect Smitty from himself. Smitty takes care of himself. He will be good to go for at least a few more good years.

Well to be honest Rivera is probably being a bit homerish but Smith can still fly when he's fresh. I don't think Smith is as fast as he used to be but he's still crisp and explosive.

I just know that we should all know as Panther fans to never count Smith out of anything.

He was laying out in OTAs. He is as spry as ever.

That half a step may be true. He can't outrun everybody anymore. But he still demands help, and he is still productive. Albeit a tad unlucky. If he had most of those just short passes turned into TDs. His numbers would look a whole lot better.

I know it's a Long shot, but if he averages 1100 yards per season for four seasons he will be number two all time receiver in yards

He only even needs to average about 800 yards to crack the top ten...

Also, when investigating those stats, I was pleased to remember that if Torry Holt had've stuck around only a couple more years he'd have had a shot to do more than Moss/Owens did in the same amount of time, and could have even had a shot at topping Rice at #1 if he'd have REALLY stuck it out.

Smitty doesn't really get to play WR when he first comes into the league, completely misses 2004, Jake goes down in 2007, gets suspended for like 2-3 games for 2008 yet still has 1400+ yards, Jake finally breaks in 2009, 2010... well.... yeah... I think 2010 is better not even mentioned.

And he's been double and triple covered during pretty much all of this time.  Imagine what his numbers might look like if he could get some of that lost time back... particularly 2004, I think he would've fuging beasted that year.
