There was at one time some speculation that he might turn out to be better than Smitty. Obviously that didn't happen.

I vaguely recall him commenting that Smitty should be considered 'the other' SS.

Steve Smith never said anything, at least I don't think, but Michael Johnson (the safety for the Giants who broke Smith's arm) was talking trash about him before their upcoming game in 2010 and made a mention to it.
