Kugbila Game Footage: Is he worth the 4th round pick?

Everyone wants him to work out because he's a Panther now but be honest with yourself people, if the Browns or Raiders had picked this guy ahead of us in the 4th we all would have laughed at them for being such idiots, taking some small school UDFA talent in the 4th. But it was that Hurney built scouting department and Carolina that took him so now he's gonna be a beast, the next Carl Nicks, ectI

I like to see as glass half full  vs other people on the board............. Wait until he plays a snap of football before discrediting him.....

there are literally hundreds and hundreds of public analysts and scouts and not a single one gave him a 4th round grade... or even a 5th or 6th round grade. I've yet to see anyone grade him as anything but a 7th round/UDFA. These guys aren't right 100% of the time (obviously) but they tend to be right more often than not and it's very telling when there's such a massive consensus.

I've watched his tape and he looks like an UDFA, not impressed at all. I don't trust this Hurney built scouting department in the mid/late rounds either. Maybe he works out, maybe he doesn't, I don't know. The draft is always a gamble but this pick looks like we're taking one of those sucker bets in a casino that no informed gambler ever makes. Odds look much better that it'll end in bust rather than boom.

Dude is a 4th-5th rounder on size and athletic ability alone. Ton of potential.

Dude is massive and moves well. Has long arms.

smh at some of you.

Had this guy had the grades and went to a SEC school he would have been a 1st - 3rd round pick.

Remember the other day when they said we were gonna run the ball this year? He is perfect for that. Finesse stuff might take awhile, but straight ahead blocking and even block one guy and get to the next level is good for him. He did that several times, get off his guy and get a LB.

The problem with that is Bell is the same thing just at tackle. Bell does not have the quick feet to pass protect.Do we want 2 guys that cant pass protect on the right side of the line?

I am not a scout but I did not see anything special about him based on what I watched.

My hope is that Gettlemen sees enough athletic ability that he can learn the postion.

Stop the presses.....some wanna be arm chair scout has watched tape on him and given his grade.

laughable.

You have no idea how to evaluate NFL talent...if you did, you would not be sitting where you are.

There were many comments after we took him that the coaches who worked him out loved the kid and raved about him.

I will trust Gettleman and our scouting dept over anyone on this board....hell, I would probably trust my 13 yo daughter's opinion over most of you.  LOL

I like what I am seeing. It is the play off so opponent should at least not suck (even though they of course is not NFL-level).

In the Winston Salem game I think 98 is actually a good player (Berry Tripp, from NC so someone might know him?). Kugbila is still beating him on almost every play but anytime 98 moves to pure nose and someone else is lined up over Kugbila (short yard/goal line situation) that defender is totally blown out of the play. Tripp also have a lot more success bull rushing the center so he should at least be better when his teamates.

Yes I know, almost always beating a DII player that is better than his teamates is still not really much. But hey, it is May so lets dream a little.

I agree he struggle in pass protection against speed rusher (but both comes of blocks well and blocks well on the second level so he should be able to pull on running plays).

I do not see the problem picking projected late rounder in the 4th. If you think you have discovered someone special why take a risk the just one other team have the same and will grab him in the early 5th?

If you do not agree take a look at this list:

Joe Adams, Frank Alexander, Brandon Hogan, Eric Norwood, Mike Goodson, Tony Fiammetta, Ryne Robinson, Nate Salley, Stefan LeFors, Colin Branch

It is not like we usual, read ever, find a starter, or even a contributer, in the 4th...

Anyone can learn how to evaluate players.

OL ~ quick feet, use of hands, power, awareness

WR ~ route running, hands, speed, athletic ability

and so on.

Just have to know what to look for.

Very doubtful that someone sitting behind a computer watching youtube highlights knows how to truly evaluate the potential of a player....and provide an accurate grading of said player.

It is a skillset that takes years to refine.  If it were that easy, we would all work for NFL teams.

We can see some obvious things...but the nuances of projecting players in the NFL takes a lot of time to see.

Lastly, when you are talking about guys being taken in the 4th-7th rounds, you are looking for physical charactersitics (size, athletic ability, quickness, etc) that you think can be coached up.  This is especially true when looking at later round OLinemen.  You draft for potential and measurables at that time of the draft.

Skill / Talent / Athleticism / Frame / Potential are all easily identifiable and measurable if you know what to look for.

I spent 10 years serving tables from high school till end of college. Can I go and get a job at the most prestigious restaurant? No.

Incase you havent learned this life lesson yet,

Its not what you know, but who you know.

It all depends on how much said person behind computer knows and how good they are at identifying certain traits and attributes.

There is only a limited number of those "jobs" that are given to people connected to the coaches and organization.

You look for physical characteristics in all phases of the draft. Not just in the later rounds.

The whole point of this thread was to watch the tape yourself and evaluate...

The panthers spent a lot of time with this guy.  They also have something to compare him to--Silatolu.

Kugbila will probably be starting by 2014--possibly by day 1.  If that is the case, how can anyone question a fourth round pick?
