Built a small pond last week....

Yeah I've had a pond/water feature in our center patio for quite a few years. It's stocked with Shubunkins (poor man's Koi) and there were 4 of them about 4" long.

One night something made a meal of two of them and left nothing but scales right beside the pond. Dont know if it was a racoon or a possum.

I have since enclosed this patio and it's a rec area for the boys. Now they (unsuccessfully) hunt the fish.

pics of the pond? how big is it and how did you excavate/fill?

Its small, only about 300 gallons. I dug it out and put in a rubber liner. This is my first pond, didn't want to do much in case I didn't like it. So far enjoying it though. Have comet goldfish and a few small koi in it.

I did the filters and such myself. There is a waterfall on the far end and a nice little wet/dry filter I designed on the near end (the big pot with bamboo). I did some research and put in some common plants at Lowe's that do well in bogs. A lot of people buy water plants but there are a surprising amount of terrestrial plants that will do fine in ponds. Daylillies, Hostra, creeping jenny....

Putting a hammock out next to it soon. Just like the sound of the running water.

Nice work. That's next on my list but I conveniently waited until my dad visits for a couple weeks when the baby arrives.

Total for the pond was probably 400 dollar range. Most of the stuff came from amazon prime. Most expensive items were the pumps.

It really wasn't that hard, but our deck isn't that large... it probably took about 4 hours total and my 17 y.o. really got out there and helped a lot, which is unusual...

I coated the poo out of it too, don't want any more splinters.
