Catfishing tonight....

I knew an old man that lived through the depression and had to make do with little when growing up. He used to collect cigarette butts at work until he got a bucket full. He would then go to the local slaughterhouse and fill his bucket with blood. After a couple days of soaking, he would pour out all the butts and let them dry in the sun. He boxed them until he wanted to go catfishing. The butts could never be sucked or pulled off by the fish and the melting blood in the water was a definite attractant to the fish. Just sharing.

I don't have any cut perch yet so I am looking for alternatives.

Chicken livers?

Beef liver works better. Smells just as bad and it's a firmer meat so stays on your hook better. Also, if you want to get real creative.... Get a couple of cans of dog food, punch holes in it, and throw it in the water where you're fishing.

you could fish your whole life with nightcrawlers and only catch one catfish over 30 lbs

or you could fish with massive bream heads and catch 2-3 a year

I remember a few years ago at a pig picking, some dude had rigged up practically an entire chicken, tied it to a tree on the side of Smith Creek, and caught a flathead (I think?) that must've been at least 4 feet long. I suppose you're right.

I grew up on The James River which is one of the best cat-fishing places in the world. Anyway we would do the usual beer drinking and hoping not to catch anything. Would catch a lot of eels. Anyone catch a river eel?

Anyway we pulled a 60 or 70 pound cat out one night and pretty much had no idea what to do next.

big bait is more tempting to large fish, and makes sure that nothing smaller than 10 or 15 can pick it up.  i have foulhooked smaller cats sniffing around a brim head too big for it to actually move

the best way really is 2 big cat rods out and fish for peckers while you wait for the big one to roll through
