Gerald Henderson Brings Back The Buzz

Recommended Posts

I really do love the effort and the hustle from Henderson.  BUT I feel like we can find an upgrade in the next two years...  My heart would love to see us keep him long term, and for him to really turn it on next year, but if a guy like McLemore fell (crazy things have happened..sometimes?), how do you pass him up?  In the recent SI Mock they have us taking Victor Oladipo...who sounds lot like Henderson when he came out...

I'm glad I'm not a NBA GM...  I guess I'm pretty clueless...  Again, I love Henderson, but the question is, is he truly a long term Hornet?

I know a lot of fans stopped following the team toward the end of last season, and while a lot of fans quit, Gerald Henderson did not.

Hendo (March): 20.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.3 apg

Hendo (April): 17.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.9 apg

Based on how he played toward the end of the year, he needs to be kept.

This is definitely worth mentioning again.  This guy is a class act.  He never quit despite being on a terrible team.  Yeah, it's a contract year, but I don't feel that way with Hendo.  He plays hard, he's rugged, and just needs some talent around him.  Mentioned above, but even if we keep him as a 6th man, pay him fairly, he'll be worth it.  You just have to keep good players who want to play in this city.

Look...I like hendo...and he for sure played well the last 2 months of the season...but what about the other 3 years? As a season ticket holder I have gotten to see him struggle and disappear completely in games and be clearly overmatched against his opponents. I think he would be a 6th man of the year candidate off the bench...but at the position he plays...I think we need to aim higher.

5 or 6 million a year and I'm probably in. But anything more than that and we overpaid. Remember he was on the trade block in February for a bag of peanuts and we didn't get any bites.

I'd like to preface this post by saying that I'm a UNC fan and hated Henderson at Duke, but I'm a big fan his now.

So let's get this started...

What do you mean the other three years? He average 15.1 points per game in 2011-12 (his first year as a starter) season. If you remember in 2009-10 Henderson didn't play because of Stephen Jackson and Raja Bell being the go to guys, Henderson only average 8 minutes per game as a rookie. In 2010-11, Jackson was still on the team and Henderson had to play second fiddle averaging 9.6 points in 24 minutes. I'd also like to point out that these past two years Henderson has only averaged around 32 minutes per game... Now when Henderson plays over 35 minutes a game. he is almost guaranteed to scored 20+ points and in three games this year he scored 34 points or more.

The problem with Bobcats/Hornets fans is the fact that they are comparing Henderson to Kobe, Harden, Wade etc...

The fact is that Henderson was 10th in points per game for shooting guards in 2011-12 and 11th in points per game for shooting guards in 2012-13. Essentially we have a top 10 shooting guard and people want to get rid of him... why?

Let's check to see if Henderson actually gets overmatched...

Vs. Joe Johnson 4/6 (Henderson: 22 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals; Johnson: 15 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals)

Vs. J.R. Smith 3/29 (Henderson: 35 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals; Smith: 37 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block)

Vs. DeMar DeRozan 3/20 (Henderson: 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block; DeRozan: 19 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists)

Vs. DeMar DeRozan 3/15 (Henderson: 22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals; DeRozan: 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal)

Vs. Thabo Sefalosha 3/8 (Henderson: 21 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists; Sefalosha: 13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block)

Vs. Aaron Afflalo 2/19 (Henderson: 24 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists; Afflalo: 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block)

Vs. Kobe Bryant 2/8 (Henderson: 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block; Bryant: 20 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 block)

Vs. Stephen Curry 12/21 (Henderson: 23 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block; Curry: 27 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks)

On paper he might be over-matched, but when it comes to effort; no one outworks Hendo.

    • A Quarterback in this mold is and was always going to take a long time to develop. I think he still has quite a bit to go.  We didn't draft him for his foot speed or arm talent. We drafted him to be the leader and commander of the offensive unit. and he is growing in that capacity on a weekly basis. Being smart and being able to make the correct adjustment and get your team into the right play and being able to get the ball to the right spot is the most important thing an NFL quarterback can do. You can scheme around it, you can simplify, you can try everything, but those skills make a dominant NFL quarterback more than anything else. More than anything else, that's what the Montana's, Brady's, and Manning's do. And those are the ones you want. What we are seeing with Mahomes is a guy that has the brains, unique arm talent, and above average foot speed. He may go down as the greatest. I don't see that in Bryce's future.  He's got a long way to go, but he's showing he's capable of being that game managing, offense controlling guy. While that type of quarterback is the most dominant, it also takes the longest to get them game ready, and if they don't ever get to a dominant level, they often don't pan out. So it is a risk.
    • This is fake news as Trump would say. Nobody’s comparing seasons the nfl pundits ESPN first take si.com and other outlets are stating what we’re saying in this thread it looks like he’s regressing. Now to address your statement their leading their division ummm have you seen their defensive rankings compared to ours. You’re cherry picking which you can’t do with me I’m not a poster who’s here to argue I like thoughtful in depth convos. They have the 4th ranked defense put that in Carolina don’t you think we’d probably lead our division this year realistically. With the offense you’ve seen the last four weeks being average let’s just say with a 4th ranked defense how’d do you think we’d look or how many more wins would we have? You can’t say oh but they still lead their division knock it off it’s bc they have a terrible division and an elite defense. CJ is dealing with issues Bryce dealt with bad Oline and he has weapons but they’ve missed time and when out he’s looked below average having multiple 2pick games, the man’s had a 4 sack game followed by a 8 I repeat 8 sack game that’s a bad Oline leaving him to regress so Panther Bryce fans can’t pipe down we’re just stating facts bc yes they’re winning with a elite defense give a little more context to your statements it Matters!
