Hixon excited about fresh start in Carolina

Well his impact won't be measured in just yards. We are talkin TDs, blocking, and just spreading the D. Its important people feel they need to watch out for him even if he isn't a big gainer.

From what I've seen of Hixon he has the ability to make circus catches with relative ease, he looks natural doing it.  He's not afraid of running through the middle and getting hit. He honestly reminds me of Lafell, but a little bit more athletic. He's not fast, he can make some people miss. But he's an above average reciever for sure.  His problem was not getting playing time. With Nicks, Cruz, Toomer, Smith, playing more than him.  But when he got his opportunities, he made the most of them. I wouldn't be surprised if there was heavy competition between him and Lafell for the #2.

a lot of faith in a 3rd or 4th WR on the depth chart.him not getting playing time is from 2 reason. his injuries and other WRs out playing him.hope im wrong, but a 7th year WR is not going to break out finally.

Lafell got almost 700 yards last year. Some folks think that was no where near acceptable. But if Hixon can get the same amount, he is a "great" pick-up. Um, ok.

I do believe Hixon can improve on the 300+ yards Murphy got last year. I just happen to think that 500 yards out of Hixon is closer to his ceiling. All he has to do is be reliable and he is worth his money. He is never going to be more than a #3-#4 option. So his yards are likely not going to set the world on fire.

Again, all Hixon has to do is stay healthy and be reliable. Anything more than that is a bonus.

ordinarily i would agree with you, but already we're expecting steve smith to pick up ~1200 to consider it a successful season, plus lafell increasing his yardage for the fourth year in a row to around ~800, plus running backs that generally pick up at least 500, plus olsen, who should be good for at least 500 if we have a successful season... combine a commitment to the running attack that should limit a successful season to around 4000 yards and that only leaves another thousand yards split between hixon, gettis, pilares, adams, and the rest of the WR/TE corps.

 

i would love 7-800, but i don't think it's a realistic expectation unless he's supplanting lafell in playing time.

murphy had 336 yards. that's about in the range that you're talking and i don't consider that great at all. the thing is he should have had a lot more than that. he was targeted 61 times over the season and only caught 25. that's a horrible 41% and quite a bit lower than smith, olsen, and lafell...esp. those last couple. considering smith is usually double covered or is having to deal with the other team's best DB(s) and the shear number of times he's targeted it's understandable why he wouldn't be well over 50%, but murphy had no excuse for being so far under that.

 

i expect every receiver to be over 50%. if hixon can do that and get targeted about the same amount and catch as well as he has in the past (66% last year, fwiw) we should be looking at quite a bit more production. the targets should be there for hixon to get well over 500 yards and pushing 600.

 

making the most of the opportunities he's given and being given more opportunities...and getting into the endzone several times will make it a good pickup. great is 7-800 and realistic or not, that's where i'm setting the bar. i think it's definitely doable.

i hope i'm wrong and our WR3 is sniffing 1k yards but i don't expect it and i won't measure hixon's success by it.

Another aspect that could limit Hixon's yards is the fact that Cam is learning to lean on the check down. I expect our RBs to have more yards this year. They had almost 600 last year.

If Cam can get his comp% up a notch. There are going to be touches to be had. As long as Hixon stays healthy, he should, and probably will, be an integral piece of the puzzle.

IMO, I don't think he dropped that many passes. He just could not make any adjustments while the ball was in the air. I remember Cam throwing him one of those back shoulder throws down the sideline, he fell down trying to adjust to the ball. I still giggle over that.

Hixon should be a huge upgrade over Murphy. That makes us better. I can live with that.

for him to be considered a great pickup? yes. i expect him to have in between 5-600 yards, tho, based on the number of targets murphy got and with his ability to catch. i don't think that's unrealistic at all. i want him to be that guy that takes heat off smitty, tho. i want him to get 7-800, tho i don't expect it.
