Did G-man jump the gun a little too soon in FA? I realize hindsight is always 20:20.

OK, perhaps you could say that maybe a few years here or there (i.e., age) really matters when it comes to signing band-aids, near-busts, and/or journeymen. Or maybe Gettleman is truly more optimistic about the upside and/or fit of some of the new guys within our system. Or, maybe the off-field issues have turned him off, but I got to believe that Kerry Rhodes from a purely football standpoint has to be better than either Mike Mitchell or D.J. Campbell. Moreover, I would think that Brandon Lloyd would help us more than either Hixon or Ginn. On an off note, I suspect that Devery Henderson may even provide more umph than Hixon or Ginn, particularly if he has a chip on his shoulder from being shown the door in New Orleans.  But, getting back on point, I don't know if G-man is finished signing FAs, and I don't even know that I would want him to sign any of those guys now that we seemingly have a glut at safety and WR (albeit with somewhat nondescript talent), but I still wonder if we shouldn't explore the opportunities and let the chips fall where they may. Competition is key, and even though I know we've got a tough season ahead, I want to do everything to win now, and make the playoffs.

How many teams has Lloyd been able to stay on? ....... There is a reason for that.

 

I rather go with a young guy like Mitchell (25) who just needs to be given a chance. Then get a retread like Rhodes who's 30.

Plus, Gettleman isn't bringing in many aging vets to act as stop-gaps.  Florence is about the only guy who fits that description.  Gettleman doesn't seem to interested in stop-gaps right now, he's trying to build a team for the future.

Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots will probably not pick up Lloyd’s $3 million option bonus, and that the Patriots got tired of Lloyd’s behavior in the locker room and on the practice field last season.

What we reported last month was highly likely -- receiver Brandon Lloyd being released so the Patriots didn't have to pay his $3 million option bonus -- happened Saturday afternoon before the deadline, a league source said.

 

The Patriots specifically built this protection into the contract because Lloyd had the reputation for being hard to handle in his many previous stops. The Patriots were his sixth team in nine years.

 

The move will clear $4.9 million off the Patriots' cap, but there is $2 million in dead money. It could be split over two years if he is designated as a post-June 1 cut.

 

Lloyd was productive for the Patriots last season with 74 catches for 911 yards, but he was very inconsistent on the field as far as staying on his feet, fighting for the ball and having consistency with quarterback Tom Brady.

 

Lloyd was also a handful with in the locker room and on the practice field with his inconsistent personality, as we explained last month. He was not a favorite among his teammates.

  • Nobody should be surprised that we didn't hear anything about Lloyd's behavior during the season. The Patriots are the best at keeping a lid on things in-house during the season.
  • From what I know, I wouldn't say that Lloyd was a bad guy who the team must jettison or anything. It was just the type of up-and-down mood swings that we heard a lot about in his previous stops:

 

  • You just never know what you're going to get with Lloyd, and either you can deal with it or you can't. For example, talked to one player a few weeks ago that said he was talking to Lloyd about something and suddenly Lloyd said in mid-sentence, "I don't want to talk to you anymore," and put his headphones on.
  • It's one thing for that unevenness to be dealt with in the locker room and on the practice field, but when you combine it with his inconsistent play ... the Patriots love consistency. Anything that disrupts the flow of the season too often becomes a nuisance and tiresome. That was Lloyd. The Patriots don't really do eccentricity well.

6 teams.....in 9 years. he has the talent to be productive so that's not really it. for him to have that much talent and be that unable to stay with any team for any length of time he's got to have some pretty hard to deal with baggage.

 

i want more talent at WR brought in...but i don't want the baggage that comes with a hard to deal with personality like lloyd apparently has. i don't think the lockerroom needs it.

Not only this, but I can't see Smitty taking too much of that attitude from anyone, especially not another WR.  I'm not saying "huuurrr duuurrr He's gonna punch him in the face duuurrrr hurrrr".  I'm just saying that Smitty being so intense and expecting everyone to work as hard as he does, would be like oil and water with those two.

I really think everyone is just hungry for some news man. Let the battles of the db's, wr's and dt's happen to see exactly what we have and go from there. If they can take someone now or at anytime on a fair contract then they will, they'll just bump the bottom of that position and keep the fight going. 

 

We are in bargain hunt mode, and this whole "we have x money to spend, so spend it" ignores what the FO is aware of.. we have ~$9M in dead money next year, the contracts we have scheduled for 2014 are near the possible 125M cap max already, and we'll be down 14FA's + any of these 1 year contracts not being there. Soooo much change is coming our way that it's not even funny
