At this time, I'd like to say thanks again to the Jets for being one holy hell of a clusterfug team and picking Richardson above Star. I didn't believe any management squad in the NFL could be that flippin stupid, but you Jets have proved it in spades.

Soooo... thanks guys! Enjoy many more butt-fumbles in your future!

I'm still not sure why Star fell as far as he did, it's really not making sense unless maybe there's something else we don't know.  The whole heart scare thing was found out to be a misdiagnosis... so why didn't teams pull the trigger on him?  Like the Jets for instance.  Star was regarded as, hands down, the best DT in the draft yet they pick Richardson.  Then again it is the Jets I guess.

Did we even bring Star in for a work out prior to the draft?  Since the general consensus was that he'd be gone before we ever had a chance at him

I don't know, maybe I'm just being cautiously optimistic, but the Panthers haven't really given me much reason to be anything but so these past few years.  That said I'm still excited as fug about our front 7 and hoping Star is everything as advertised.

Rookie-year stars drafted into the Canadian Football League earn salaries around $50,000 Canadian as of 2010, according to Monster.com, although league minimum for rookies is $30,000. League minimum for veteran players is $32,000, with average salaries in the league around $45,000, according to DarrenBarefoot.com. By contrast, NFL's minimum base salary is $295,000 American, roughly $292,357 Canadian as of February 2011 exchange rates, or approximately 10 times the CFL's league minimum for a similar salary.

Starters and CFL superstars may expect to usually earn between $60,000 and $120,000 Canadian, according to DarrenBarefoot.com. The highest paid player in the CFL, Winnipeg Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray, was slated to receive $500,000 Canadian for the 2011 season, although recent contract negotiations reduced that amount. Although figures weren't released, he reportedly cut around $125,000 from his compensation package, according to SportsNet.ca. By comparison, the NFL's highest paid player, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, earns about $18 million each year, according to Forbes.

And i read that a player on a NFL practice squad minimum salary is $5,700 a week. Now im not sure if the team you play makes the playoffs mean you get extra weeks pay but 5700 x 17 weeks = 96,900

Don't use the Jets as a barometer of success. Mayock said that numerous teams ahead of us were stupid for passing on Star and it shows how bad their front offices are. I believe we worked Star out in Utah IIRC.

I know I'm going a little off topic here but could you guys Imagine if we picked up a quality Safety and CB with the money we got from DWill. We have the most dominate Defense in team history probably.

Yeah, I went back and edited my original post adding a little quip about the Jets FO.  Jets gonna Jet.  Good to know that we did work him out at least and not just pull the trigger because, "Well he's Star Lotulelei".  Just can't get over the fact that he fell as far as he did, but poo has to fall our way once in a while I guess, right?

It's hard to figure out why guys slide sometimes. Look at Aaron Rogers. Like you said, maybe we finally got lucky for once.

Yeah i was going to ask earlier and have tried to find an answer but haven't. Did Star simply fall due to his misdiagnosis? I understand teams not wanting to take someone early in the first with a heart problem. But after he cleared all tests Philly and Carolina were the only teams to have worked him out correct? I don't understand why some other teams passed on him/didn't even work him out.

Well I know this is Gettleman's first draft as GM, but as an organization we usually hit the first round out the park, so... here's to continuing that trend and back-to-back-to-back ROYs!

2011 OROY

2012 DROY

2013 DROY

How fuging awesome would that be?

I'm not so sure. Some poster here said that Gaydosh would make more money as a practice squad player in the NFL than a starter in the CFL. I could be wrong though.

I did some Googling--understand that the $$ amounts I am using for the CFL are Canadian dollars, but the difference is minimal (2 cents).

A rookie star player earned (2010) about $50,000 per season (minimum was $30k for rookies).  The best QBs in the CFL make $300k or less.  Wow.

Practice squad players start at $5700 per week--that is not the average, it is the minimum.  So, the signing bonus alone would probably make the NFL more lucractive.  If he is cut, he gets the bonus and can go play in the CFL.

If he stays on the PS for a year, he makes more than a star rookie would in the CFL.

Wow.

I guess the next question would be, "Would he stick on the PS?"

Yep that is the question. Would he rather be on the PS make more money and have a chance to make more in the NFL?

Or actually play in the CFL but make less money.

I hope he stays with us though.
