So why can the Pelicans name happen right away but Hornets take two years?

Recommended Posts

I think they will be the Charlotte Hornets next season. The name, website, logo, etc... is all owned by the NBA already. Even the general color schemes will probably be similar to past jerseys and mechandise, but just updated a little. I am with Zod on this, I don't see how it could take more than a few months to manufacture some items, paint a basketball court, change the website, and print some tickets with Hugo on them. 18 months is ludacris if you think about it.

I'm not sure how all that works, but franchises don't own the players the NBA does. There is no reason we could not honor former Charlotte Hornets.

That's the thing...  To my knowledge, I don't recall New Orleans ever honoring any Charlotte players once they moved, at least not with a ceremony or anything.  The only example I'm aware of as far as them honoring a player at all was when they hung Phills' jersey up in the rafters in New Orleans...

Other than that, I don't recall them ever having Dell, Muggsy, LJ, or any other player of Charlotte fame down there for anything.  I think it's kind of made even more obvious that these guys have been without a basketball home considering Dell and Muggsy have been completely tied to Charlotte in recent years after retirement.

In my mind, there is absolutely nothing stopping us from honoring these guys for ourselves.  And in all honesty, from Benson's comments, I don't think he would really put up a fight if we asked for the "history" officially.  It seems he wants to completely distance himself and his franchise from the Hornets and anything prior to him taking it over.

because they wouldnt be former players of this team, they are former players of the pelicans.

I used this example in another thread, but the Miami Heat hung a Michael Jordan jersey in their arena and retired the #23 for future Heat players back in 2003.

When did Jordan play for the Heat?

They played their home games in Charlotte. They lived in Charlotte. Their history is in Charlotte. Unless they were on the team when it moved, then they have no connection to the team that currently calls New Orleans home.
