Rivera: Panthers' new offense will be more of a collaberative effort

hmmm.... interesting.

“It’s not necessarily his offense as much as the Panthers’ offense, what we’re going to do,” Rivera said last week.

"Shula, in his third year in Charlotte, will seek input from the entire offensive staff."

"And while Rivera has indicated the offense won’t look much different than it did under Chudzinski, he said Shula would bring 'his own personality' to it."

"Shula was known as a conservative play-caller as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator from 1996-99 and as Alabama’s head coach from 2003-06. But Rivera has a different impression."

“I think what I like about him is his aggressive nature. I like that,” Rivera said. “I think the thing that he and I have talked about is doing things that will maximize each individual’s abilities.”

Things to think about...Chud being arrogant and Shula having an "aggressive nature"? Weird.

I don't know how saying he has an aggressive nature is taking pressure off of Shula, when that is in fact the opposite of his history. But the thing to note is that the offense is gonna be run differently, not the plays or schemes neccesarily but the way those plays and schemes are decided upon, which is the complete opposite of ego-maniac Chud.

Reading between the lines; I think Cam is gonna have a lot of room to make his own calls/audibles now.

^^^ This.

I think it'll be a little more (or a lot more) open for Cam to make some on field choices. if I recall he wasn't really allowed to audible much until late in the season last year?

I think that might be a big help.

I'm hope'n.

We will see.

I think the bigger question/concern is how will Shula translate this scheme on game day.Its one thing to have all these pays and schemes but it is quite different calling them in a way that creates nice 80 yards drives after having to read what defenses are doing and quickly translating that to a plays. Not to be negative Nancy but I feel he should have left him at qb coach.

People change. That is a fact.

How can anyone think he'll be the same as he was over a decade ago?

I no not disagree that he can change his schemes and plays but my fear is how will that translate to game decisions.

I say this only because I have never seen him do it successively.

I think that approach is very much different than Chuds

The Smith and Moose interview talked about Henning asking for input every week from his players. Like their top ten plays..I guess .he would call the when he ran out of creative ways to run draw plays

Not so sure how much freedom he will have to freelance at the line of scrimmage (he is still a young QB)....I expect more than last year, but not complete freedom.

But, I would imagine that he will have a nice amount of input into the gameplan during the week.

This would make him even more comfortable on gameday.

I think you guys are reading way too much into this. All Rivera was saying is that Shula didn't walk in with his own play book. Rather he's taken the existing one and reforming it with input from the coaching staff that maximises the strengths of the players.

And the aggressive comment I think is just a nice way of saying he's going to run the ball instead of trying to insert every trick play known to man.

I do think that Newton will have a lot of freedom to call audibles and change things at the line.  He is going into year 3 and showed toward the end of the season that he could protect the ball and make good decisions.  I don't think Chud thought he could though.  If I remember correctly there was some discussion at the beginning of the year suggesting that the staff didn't think newton could pick up the offense they created and were trying to simplify it so he could pick it up.  Then later in the year they simplified things so Newton could play faster.

Did I make that up or was there some discussion along the way last year.....

IIRC there was some off-the-record talk that fueled speculation about that, but of course no one ever came right out and said so.

For now, I'm hoping that Shula's conservative play calling is geared around the Joe Gibbs school of thought--run what works until they finally stop it.  Our playbook could be the least imaginative in NFL history, but if it moves the chains I'll be happy.

Then again you loved Henning's offense when he was here.  Remember the always hike the ball on the first sound to avoid confusion.  Sometimes the defense got there before the center could snap it to the quarterback....

Just saying.......................

    • Fair enough. I never once said not supporting Tepper makes you a bad fan by the way. I can't stand the guy myself. You on the other hand don't like anything about the team. You can't stand the owner or the coach because his religion doesn't fall in line with how you feel it should so I'm curious why you are even a fan at this point? Hell, you like nothing about the team, why even be a fan these days?  We can go backs and forth about how many games we have been to and measure dicks if you want or but it doesn't matter. I've been to my fair share over the years. Some as a fan and some work related but I bet you have been to more due to my weekends being filled with some work I do at the collegiate level so I probably only average maybe 2-3 games per year tops. You have me beat there im sure. You are probably very correct on us not being the same in anything at all I am quite sure of that. If I'm a "mark" (as you put it) for not liking Tepper and not caring about Canales religion or his political beliefs or letting it have weight on whether or not I like the team then call me a "mark" but you're still a whiny bitch either way.  When you hate everything about leadership from their personalities to their religious beliefs all the way to who they vote for at that point why even be a fan? I can side with you judging by your beliefs that you have made apparent, if you owned and coached the team, I sure as hell would find a new one to support but as you said we are different. Enjoy Norway, it is a beautiful country. Visited last year myself and absolutely loved it.
    • The playing well part, depends on what happens going forward. It could have been a tease that will dig our hole deeper.  In the small picture of one game, probably his best game. Green Bay wasn't as great as people think it was. More like one good quarter. Followed by two games of exactly nothing.
    • Oh, it was handled horrifically.  Ego got in the way of a plan.  I'm just saying, that he actually probably stumbled into the better outcome/plan.
